A proposal put forward by the Apostolic Nuncio to Britain, regarding same-sex marriage, has sparked a lively debate. Meanwhile, Christians, Jews and Muslims are uniting against PM David Cameron’s plan.

that seems like a good sign that these 3 faiths are uniting to oppose the same-sex marriage plan. i am sure the CoE is not part of the opposition, but the Catholic church in Britain and perhaps some other protestant groups along with Muslim and Jews will join together in this fight.

It is definitely a good sign that they are coming together to fight against this. I hope and pray that “gay marriage” here in the United States is overturned in every state that has allowed this atrocity.

He is blaming his party’s poor showing in the recent election on economic rather than his gay marriage stance.
Seems like some politicians are prepared to gamble the final destination of their souls for a few measly years in power in this veil of tears, which shall be gone like the morning dew in the heat of the sun…

The idea that the swing to Labour was because of ‘gay marriage’ is wishful-thinking.

Yes well sorry, read that in a statement from David Cameron, that it was economics, not the gay marriage issue, so wishful thinking from someone I expect…

The whole thing was all about economics and a range of stupid Government errors before the election and nothing whatsoever to do with gay marriage. Voting Labour because the voter was cross about Tory proposals on gay marriage would be, well, stupid.

Are you seriously trying to tell us that these elections were decided by the subject of gay marriage?

Perhaps you’d be better understood if you said clearly what you wanted to say in the first place.

Let’s see if I can help you . . .

1 were the local elections decided on the question of economics/government competence in governing or on the question of proposals on gay marriage?

2 was Cameron correct to blame economics rather than the gay marriage issue?

3 was Kaninchen correct in her suggestion that anybody who thought that it was other than economics/performance was indulging in wishful-thinking?

mmm… I think that assessment is premature. Although the headline suggests that such an alliance has formed, the article indicates that it hasn’t. Rather, the headline is based upon a suggestion made by the papal nuncio, Archbishop Antonio Mennini.

Here is the most relevant portion of Archbishop Mennini’s speech to the bishops of England and Wales
As you well know, the Pastoral Letter on marriage which you issued at the beginning of the Government consultation was a good start in highlighting the importance of marriage and in encouraging our people to reflect on, and express, the view of Christians, Catholic and others, in this regard. However, I think that most of us realise that this is the start of what may well prove to be a lengthy and probably difficult campaign. As I said when we met last November, I also wonder if we shouldn’t ask for and look for more support among other Christian confessions and indeed, persons of other faiths. It seems to me that, concerning the institution of marriage, and indeed the sanctity of human life, we have much in common with the position of the Jewish community, the Chief Rabbi and many of the more significant representatives of Islam.

So he has previously suggested such an interfaith alliance. However, the article in the first post quotes the Archbishop of Southwark, Peter Smith, as saying no outreach to the Jewish community has been made, which indicates there hasn’t been any movement towards a “holy alliance.”

The article does go on to say that religious leaders of various faiths are opposed to same-sex marriage.

At least one of those religious leaders, Majid Katme, head of the Islamic Medical Association, welcomed the call for an interfaith coalition to oppose same-sex marriage. He was quoted as saying: “The time has come to establish a Holy Alliance of all faiths with those sensible people who are without faith in order to oppose gay marriage in any new law."

But again, his statement indicates that such an alliance doesn’t exist at present. Whether it will form is still an open question.
