A jealous God?

Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strenght”.

It seems that He want us to put anything ahead of Him.

Is that jealousy? If not, what is the better term for that?

One of the dictionaries I use has “a jealous God” as an example for one definition of jealous (intolerant to disloyalty). That definition is consistent with your interpretation.

A righteous jealousy is the framework of what is being referred to here. The root of the word jealous in the OT means ‘to become intensely red’ which indicates the rising heat of the emotions. This is a an intense zeal or fervor over something dear to the person and is not indicative of a modern connotation of resentfulness. In this context, God greatly desires our love of Him.

The loyal man loves, or he would not be loyal. And Jesus is as loyal to the Father as it gets, in human existence. Hence the Power to give the eternal Life of God. The Soul is of the Breath of God therefore of God, and belonging to God. Anything seeking to take that away from Him, might not be welcome in His Creation.

I never really understood how a good God could be jealous until a friend related something that happened to His family during a run of bad luck. I work in a juvenile prison and overtime is often mandatory, meaning you get fired if you refuse to work overtime. My friend got a day shift schedule with less than a year on the job, since mandatory overtime works on seniority he got “hit” a lot. In fact, he got hit several days in a row week after week. One Saturday morning he told me a story about his wife and kids going to the local high school football game. While walking through the parking lot in the dusk his son saw a thickly built guy with crew-cut red hair a short distance away. His boy ran toward the stranger yelling “Daddy, daddy.” I though about how I would feel if one of my kids called someone else dad, that’s when I understood God’s jealousy. It’s not a jealousy of possession, but a love born of an exclusive relationship. How God must feel when we run after something from this world shouting “Daddy.”

I have a few understandings I would like to share:
The statement is graceful, and far from complex. Without complex understanding, it can appear of jealousy.
My complex understanding: In this practice, God is the Motivation. God is both inexhaustible and fully considerate of your self, others, authority, material and His self. If we are motivated by anything else other than Him, we will either be limited in consideration for one or more of the above and/or energy because the motivation will be exhaustible.
As far as a better term, I would say it is Loving, Considerate, Caring, Helpful, or Kind.

A better term would be Justice. God has, by His nature, which is Love, given us everything including our very existence. He asks for nothing in return except that which he has given us - Love. It is by the Love that we give that we are joined to Love which is God.

The whole point of the passage in Mt 22:36-40 that your quote comes from is Jesus distilling all of the “Rules” of the Law down to a single Law. That Law is Love.

Quite the opposite. God is holy and cannot abide sin. We have sinned and are unworthy to be in God’s presence. God has provided an atoning sacrifice of Himself to create a bridge we can cross to be with Him. If you refuse to cross the bridge that is your fault. People do it all the time. It is no secret what happens to drug addicts, yet people choose to abuse drugs. You obviously know the consequences of rejecting God, yet you continue in your stubbornness. That’s not too sharp, tiger.:nope:

I think jealousy is the hurt felt when something that belongs to you is given to another. Everything belongs to God as the creator so only God really has a right to be jealous.

That was the Teaching when Moses found his followers worshipping False Gods, not God. The New American Bible definition of the English “Jealous” God is “Demanding Full Respect” as the Only God, (not our understanding of ‘jealous’) :bible1: The Bible was not written in modern English recently; The Church is The Expert in the Cultur, the Meaning of verses in ancient times. We have our Maronite Eastern Catholic Church which still has the Aramaic Language Jesus Used. Aramaic was a Very Basic language.

Christ spoke Aramaic; The "Syriac Orthodox Church’ Recognized Peter as the First “Bishop”, anointed by Christ himself. The name Syriac Orthodox was changed because of political problems in current recent Syria; I believe they are known as the Melkite Eastern Orrthodox Church, Always in Full Union with Rome. They still use Aramaic in their Liturgy. They Are a Catholic Eastern rite Church in Full Communion and very Historic.
