While I might not agree with everything the good Rabbi writes (i.e. hinting that the Cambridge 5 Communist spy-ring evinced some idealism), I believe the Rabbi is on the mark on as to what he believes ails Europe - similar to our Pope’s concerns on the DeChristianization of Europe. Here I quote from him at some length so one gets the gist:

But most importantly, the influence and power of Christianity — which had been extremely strong in Europe and the regions connected with it — are disappearing. To be more precise, they have already disappeared. Indeed, it has been noted that the Western world is now living in the void that Christianity has left behind. I think this is a very good definition of contemporary Western culture. Does this mean that there are no Christians any more or that there is no Pope in Rome? No. There is also an Archbishop in Canterbury, but what power or influence does he have over England? Christianity as an essence — as a power, as a meaningful factor — is disappearing. The number of churchgoers is dwindling, and the Church is selling property in order to survive.

Good or bad, this is a fact, a part of contemporary life. Christianity has left behind lots of memories, ways of expression and numerous superstitions, which tend to remain long after faith has disappeared. Someone once said that people still hate the Jews for having killed a God they do not believe in. We are now living in a world that is empty of Christianity or Judeo-Christianity. And this void is now being filled with something else and that something else is paganism.

Yes, contemporary Western culture is a pagan culture. It is ruled by the gods of olden time, only with new names and different images. The first is the god of power — formerly known as Baal (literally, “owner”) — who sometimes appears in a slightly different form as Mammon, the god of money. Another such god is Ashtoreth (Astarte or Ishtar), the goddess of sex and fertility. In our time, though, it is no longer the goddess of fertility but only of pure sex.

Yet another god, perhaps promoted from a mere muse to a full-fledged deity, is Calliope, who is now the ruler of the craving for fame. People may want money in order to obtain material goods. They may want sex for amusement, sometimes even for procreation. But Fame is now a thing in itself — it is an addiction. What does the relatively new term “celebrity” mean? It means that one is a well-known nobody. And the better one is well known, the less people care who and what one is. Indeed, many young girls and boys want to be film stars — not because they wish to be beautiful or powerful, but because they want to be known all over the world.

One may ask: where are all the temples of these gods? Well, the temples of Jupiter-Mammon are in almost every other building in the City of London and in Geneva — only they are called banks and their priests and high priests are called managers and executives. The temples (as well as the images) of Astarte are everywhere. And Calliope has little shrines in almost every household, in the form of television sets.

What does Jewish culture have to say about all this? In regard to the pagan gods, however, Judaism is very clear: we are totally against them. In that sense, we are standing in the very same place as our father Abraham stood. In Abraham’s time, the pagan world had a very high culture. Not only did it have its own poets and philosophers — some of them very great — it even had international banking, enabling the transfer of funds in clay envelopes containing clay letters for distances of 2,000 kilometres and more. Abraham was considered — rightly or wrongly — as the lonely madman of Ur (then, the lonely madman of Haran, and finally, the lonely madman of Canaan) because he was against the prevailing religious culture. Judaism has a clear stand on this issue, even if it is not so very popular.

Judaism had many disagreements with the former Christian culture of Europe, but we agreed with some of its basic notions: faith in God; the belief that our human needs are not supreme; and the understanding that man is not only a master, he is also a servant.

Thoughts?

He is correct that the christian values of europe are being degraded. But he is incorrect to say that they are gone in their entirety and that christendom has no power in Europe. Indeed papal announcements have great effect in Italy still.

However we are going down that path that he highlighted. It is not irreversible and i doubt europe will fall into complete oblivion. But still it is true that europe is falling into the grip of Satan and his temptations. The path to death is wide, but the path to eternal life is narrow indeed.

Jewish Rabbi? You mean other religions have rabbis?

Central to an understanding of what has happened is to consider the experience of Europe in the last century and how ideals of all sorts, religious and political, ancient and modern, failed to prevent or cope with what happened, the enormous destructiveness in both war and peace and, in many cases, how much they contributed to what happened.

What Europe has been left with is an intellectual environment where belief (religious or political) has become to be seen as impotent or destructive. It’s not just Christianity that is on the wane.

Without wanting to be too cynical, that does sound like wishful-thinking on a considerable scale. Great effect in the era of Berlusconi?

And the remarks by the bishops and the pontificate had no effect at all. The italian publics response is in part due to the influence of the Catholic church in Italy

Likewise the christian groups in europe as long as they are present will always retain some level of power. It may not be much but its still there (even small minorities have some measure of influence) the same rule applies for secular groups as well.

Could it be that the paganisation of the western culture is due to the fact that christians are so divided and have made a mockery of religion? That perhaps atheism and human reason are creating the division even more so? The fact is do humans need the God of Judeo-Christian and of Islam? This is not my opinion. I definitely need God and my Lord.

It seems that Satan’s purpose from the beginning was to supplant God and when he couldn’t entirely make the human race succumb to him, he tries to obliterate the name of God completely. It is most unfortunate and distressing because people don’t know what awaits them that don’t believe. I could only hope and pray.

As for those who believe, whether they be jews, christians or moslems, we should not forget the name of God. Furthermore, to my brethen in Christ, I would hope that we work our way to reconciliation despite our differences.

God Bless

I think the problem here is that your analysis assumes that what has been going on has been going on in some kind of direct relationship to a set of beliefs or sets of beliefs, as if people are making conscious decisions about them.

I’d suggest that it’s something else - it’s indifference to belief altogether, on a kind of ‘none of that stuff works, let’s not bother’ basis.

Thus, a form of nihilism?

Thus, a form of nihilism?
Nothing as ‘positive’ as that! 😃

More a permanent ‘whatever’, ‘can’t be bothered’, surely nihilism would require at least a little thought put into it?

Thus, a form of nihilism?
Forgive me if I am derailing from the original topic but I wanted to know what Nihilism implied; I didn’t know that it actually is a philosophy.

The objective of nihilism manifests itself in several perspectives:
Epistemological nihilism denies the possibility of knowledge and truth, and is linked to extreme skepticism.
Political nihilism advocates the prior destruction of all existing political, social, and religious orders as a prerequisite for any future improvement.
Ethical nihilism (moral nihilism) rejects the possibility of absolute moral or ethical values. Good and evil are vague, and related values are simply the result of social and emotional pressures.
Existential nihilism, the most well-known view, affirms that life has no intrinsic meaning or value.

Nihilism – A Meaningless World
Shakespeare’s Macbeth eloquently summarizes existential nihilism’s perspective, distaining life:

Out, out, brief candle! Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the stage And then is heard no more; it is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing.

The Rabbi seems to be quite happy about all the problems that Christianity faces. He may not know the New Testament:) so we need to inform him that the Catholic Church will always exist, until the end of the world. So please, don’t bury us yet Mr Rabbi. We have the Holy Spirit - the giver of life, you don’t.
What about the God of Rabbinic Judaism (a religion younger that Christianity!)? Theoretically it’s the God of Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, etc. In fact - it’s money and power - those criticised so much by the Rabbi (money makes the world go round, if I were a rich man - these are Jewish songs - it’s not a coincidence:). Since the WWII it’s also the cult of holocaust (with Yad Vashem as a new Temple) that supports the struggle to get more money, power and respect, to discourage anybody who’d like to criticise Jews in any way.
He’s glad about Rabbinic Judaism. As the Talmud teaches: goys are animals and Jews should harm them. Is that what the God of Abraham wants? Does he want such hatred and contempt? No, he wants love (including the love of enemy!) and in Judaism there are just dead, pointless gestures (and love of other Jews only).
We have the promise of victory and eternal life given to us by Jesus, while Rabbinic Judaism…🤷
If Christianity faces serious problems now, it’s partly because of Jews. They have supported freemasonery, abortion, communism, gay movement, anti-Catholic wars and revolutions, spreading pornography. Congratulations… But God hasn’t finished his battle yet.

I agree with him. I can only give the example of Germany, but in that he is completely right.
Germans are still paying taxes to their church, whichever it is… Only a few free churches and a few Baptist churches here and there do not receive the church tax.
Most Germans are in some way or another affiliated with the Christian religion, most however do not practice it at all. While the churches are filled with people during holiday services they are nearly empty during all the other times of the year. Christianity and the individual relationship to God is more of a commodity, a stamp pressed upon the people that they live with, but don’t orient themselves after… blonde, likes chocolate, is Catholic… none of these as more or less value than the others… one can change the hair color and give up chocolate as much as one can change one’s religion (which many do for the sake of not paying church taxes). More and more people officially leave the churches because all they get is an empty pocket… they do not really believe, they just do and live.
Children are being taught religious education in schools according to their denomination, but they can also opt out once they are 14 and then they have to attend ethics classes. Whether or not they receive religious education classes until they finish school or not does not make much of a difference in their daily lives. They go to school, hear about God and it touches them as much as English grammar does. Facts are to be known and different perspectives are to be looked at, but that is about it. If they choose to take the subject in their final tests they learn the facts about religion as if it were history and forget about it as fast. The void is large and “do what thou wilt” seems to be the most important factor…
Europe has seized to be Christian years ago… The remnant that is scattered over Europe does not change the fact that the majority is not interested in any form of religion apart from that which gives them a personal warm and fuzzy feeling. They are making themselves gods and idols… Be it to idolize tolerance, sex, power, fame, money, or drugs… Some even go ahead and fabricate themselves an own god that does not condemn sin, that does allow abortion and homosexuality and that approves of whatever they do… Others think they are on a steady way of progression, an evolution to become God like the followers of “Ramtha the Enlightened One” who talks through a woman named JZ Knight and tells the people that they are already gods and that they just need to learn how to be it…
Some follow strange guru’s or “god-men” in India thinking that they can find enlightenment there… One lady that I know personally used to follow a guru who basically told her that she could either love Jesus or him as there would be not much of a difference… His religion was uniting all other religions in one symbol and one teaching… Heresy for all of them…
The world is being paganized… though it’s worse in Europe than it is in the US.

leopolis1:

I think you missed the Rabbi’s point entirely. I disagree with your statement, “The Rabbi seems to be quite happy about all the problems that Christianity faces.”

I take great offense in your claims that the problems within Christianity are “partly because of the Jews.”

We do have serious problems within Christianity. I see it all around me. Christians are not only embracing paganism in the symbolic way the Rabbi described; Christians are embracing pure paganism in astonishing ways.

I have Christian friends, who have statues of Buddha in their gardens, Harry Potter Books for their children-with the related dragonology and wisardology books, embrace their inner Goddess, and consult with intuitists.

Paganism is, indeed, on the rise; and it is not just in Europe. We need to carefully examine ourselves.

Blaming the Jews for the ailments of Christianity is wrong on so many levels, I do not know where to begin.

Naughty Jews! Naughty, naughty Jews!

Is this sort of thing still endemic in Poland?

why is that so bad? the europeans want to move on,they cant live like before, theese are different times, people wanted change

Well, to some extent I agree with you. When one thinks of the murderous nature of European history, especially but not only in the last century, there wasn’t a way forward that dragged all the tradition of the dead generations along with it.

On the other hand, one’s own life seen as being the celebrity in one’s own ‘private reality TV show’ does seem a rather tawdry future.

Why the bashing of Jews???
For the same reason 2 black guys can call each other “******” and for the same reasons Germans can make jokes about Germans and blondes can tell blonde jokes…
She is Jewish and she may do so…

Edit: Wow there actually is some restriction on what one can write… But you know what I mean… a term they can call each other which is offensive if used by a white guy.

It works like this - somebody writes ‘seriously’ about how Jews are responsible for all sorts of bad things in the world and I ‘transform’ it into the child-like ‘Naughty, naughty . . .’ form - sometimes it’s in the form of ‘we Jews are just so terribly, terribly naughty’. It’s not Jews I’m making fun of.
