Lately VMRO supporters have accused George Soros, a philanthropist named in many potty conspiracy theories, of plotting against them. Ms Mogherini has been attacked in the press as a “fascistic Sorosoid bimbo”. American congressmen sympathetic to VMRO have attacked the American ambassador to Macedonia as a tool of Mr Soros. economist.com/news/europe/21718549-tensions-countrys-albanian-politicians-could-deteriorate-conflict-macedonian
This week protests against the Tirana Platform were held in 23 cities.

That part of the Balkans seems ever destined to be turbulent. For an excellent read on the history I would recommend “The Death of Yugoslavia” by Laura Silber.

Lost In Translation: Macedonia’s ethnic tensions near the boiling point (and Soros is stirring the pot) foxnews.com/opinion/2017/03/15/lost-in-translation-macedonias-ethnic-tensions-near-boiling-point-and-soros-is-stirring-pot.html
Yesterday was the 18th straight day that Macedonians took the streets to protest proposed changes to the constitution that would make it more favorable to Albanian Muslims. [macedoniaonline.eu/content/view/31583/1/](http://macedoniaonline.eu/content/view/31583/1/)

I recall a conversation with a former Albanian (now a U.S. citizen) who told me things were so bad, economically, in Albania that even Macedonia looked good. And so, lots of Albanians slipped into Macedonia so they could at least eat. He did say that in Macedonia, if you worked all day, it would bring you just enough to feed yourself. In Albania, it fell short of that.

He and his wife, also from Albania, were Christians, so he wasn’t involved in the “religious wars” in Macedonia. In any event, he managed to slip into Zurich illegally, where he washed dishes in a restaurant. Then relatives in Chicago got him plane fare to Chicago, where he washed dishes. His family chose his bride for him in Macedonia. The first time he met her was when she landed in Chicago. She worked in restaurants too after she got a green card.

Anyway, they scrimped and saved, and now own a small restaurant, and both are citizens. Never have I met a couple more devoted to America. It’s not really possible for us, who were born here, to really realize how bad life can be in the Balkans. Macedonia is not the Dalmatian Coast, by a long, long way.
