Just for the record, I’m not talking about myself or anyone on here that I know but if a member of this site said they were experiencing “SSA” (Same-sex attractions). What would you tell them?

Go talk to a GOOD conservative priest, and join COURAGE. And pray. A LOT.

Oh - and avoid near occasion of sin.

"OK, but don’t expect me to tell you my own personal sinful inclinations.

How 'bout them White Sox?"

Really, what else is there to say? Anything else depends on the context of the conversation. Just because somebody tells you something personal shouldn’t activate some sort of pre-recorded message or something!

It all depends on the manner in which they revealed this and the reasons for it.

I’d need to have some idea why they told me to be able to answer your question. Perhaps they want a referral to a helpful organization. Perhaps they want my opinion about if they ought to tell their wife. Perhaps they gave that information in the course of relating to me some incident that happened to them in their past. I don’t know. My response depends on what I perceive to be the reason they told me that information and what kind of communication they are seeking from me.

I may not remark upon the information at all. For example, if they are just telling me that as an incidental to relating why something happened to them in the past. Instead I’d respond to the past incident that I figure they want a response to. Like, “What an inappropriate critique your English teacher gave your paper.”

OK, in that context if it was a request for help looking for assistance in figuring out how to live chastely, I’d recommend that they look into the organization called ‘Courage.’

There are two well-meaning, but fatally dangerous ways that people try to respond compassionately to friends who come out as homosexually inclined.
  1. Good for you, celebrate who you are and do what feels good.
  2. Wow, that must be a terrible burden. Let’s get you help so you can be cured of this affliction ASAP. (I’m a little bit wary of a group called NARTH that takes this approach)
Courage avoids both of those traps and recognizes that, like all things involving people, this is not a one size fits all issue. They offer help to people to explore how and why they feel the way they do. In the case of people for whom it is related to trauma or transitory experience, they can help them to resolve those issues. For those in whom this is a deep rooted characteristic, they can help them learn to find joy in a celibate life lived for God and His people in spite of a difficult and mysterious burden.

I think catholics need to be prepared for such things. We’re called to witness to Christ and the gospel and that means learning about ways to help people who clearly ask for it.

I’ve been in that position a few times. I’ve always tried to help by trying to be supportive and a good listener. There are a number of organisations for gay Christians that I’ve recommended. Organisations who accept that there is nothing sinful about gay relationships.
Do remember that all sex that isn’t between wedded spouses is sinful

Cecilia,

Sorry about this…I ask that you refer to people with same sex attraction as heterosexuals with same sex attraction and not use “gay” anything. Gay implies acceptance of an agenda and I ask you not to propogate that notion about “gay Christian”…there is no such thing.

If I’m correct, Christianity has nothing against “fealing” SSA, only against acting on it. An I correct?

Not correct.

Same sex attraction without sexual relationships is not a sin of grave matter but it is disordered.
Same sex attraction with sexual relationships is gravely disordered and a serious sin.

Peddling false hopes like that is so very dangerous.

Attitudes like this are why Catholics will lose the argument on gay marriage and homosexuality.

Dakota,

I have no interest in winning or losing arguments. I only have interest in correctly communicating something that is and something that isn’t.🙂
