I think you neglect to understand that the on-going scandal is because the Church was protective of PR instead of children and young adults. The abuse happened.
It continued to occur and it was covered up by clerics more interested in appearances than protecting the victims. So, right now I think the Church should not respond at all to attacks, even false ones.
This whole scandal could have been contained long ago.
Part of the problem is that it was not seen as a psycho-sexual deviancy, but as a mere sinfulness. Sins are forgiven. Sinfulness can be cured.
Psycho-sexual deviancy, however, is not, per se, sin, tho acting upon it is; sexual predation is a biochemical damage to the brain; they are damaged in a way that causes them to damage others in turn, and it is a change that, as yet, has no known successful cure other than death.
But the church would try to heal these men, and forgive the sins, and give them, as we are supposed to do, another chance.
The Church lived by its own teachings… too well, tho. It was ignorance, not malice, that lead to these men being allowed to continue function as priests. And the case studies of them reveal that the supposed cures did not in fact work.
Further, still, tho’, it is important to note that sexual abuse by clergy is not uniquely catholic; the Baptists have a higher rate… and the Orthodox a similar rate to Catholics, most protestant groups fall between the Catholic low and the Baptist high.
Their sins are forgiven, but they must not be permitted to function in light of the knowledge that they are psycho-sexual deviants, who can not be cured, and for whom continued function is a constant temptation to mortal sin and for whom their damaged brains cry out for that warped, unlawful, illicit, sinful touch.
