Mario Tosatti in La Stampa reports:
There is a rumour in the Vatican of a new consistory to appoint cardinals; some believe this consistory will be called by the end of the year, some think it will take place at the beginning of 2013, a year after the last one (last February). In truth Benedict XVI is more likely to call a consistory towards the end of the Year of the Faith, which he established with the ‘motu proprio data’, “Porta Fidei” ( Door of Faith). The Year of the Faith will begin on the 11th of October 2012 and end on the 24th of November 2013; at that point, the presence of many bishops and cardinals in Rome for the closing ceremonies might mark the right time for the appointment of new cardinals.

Currently the College of Cardinals includes 123 voters, this number will drop to 114 by the end of 2012 and furthermore to 104 by the end of 2013. Since the law forbids men over eighty to actively be part of a Conclave, Benedict XVI has felt the need to keep the College of Cardinals well “stocked” and ready to deal with an eventuality that everyone hopes is still far away, but which cannot be discarded due to the pope’s age (85 in April). Truth be told, the most recent consistory has driven Benedict XVI to exceed by five people the upper limit of 120 voting members in the College, number that had been established by Paul VI and confirmed by John Paul II. By August however things will go back to normal.
Likely the only change I could foresee would be to elevate Archbishop Lori (of Baltimore). Since Cardinal O’Brien has been moved full-time to the Equestrian Order, there are no Cardinal-Electors from Baltimore at this time. Cardinal Rigali would only be 77-78 next year, so I can’t see Archbishop Chaput being given a red hat…

And so say all of us!!! 👍

Whatever happens, may the Holy Spirit guide Pope Benedict in his choice.

I hope that the Filipino Archbishop Luis Antonio ‘Chito’ Tagle is made a Cardinal at the next consistory. I think it would be a great morale booster to the Church there and in Asia in general.

And yes we all must pray that His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI is with us for many more years! He is an excellent Pontif!

Cormac Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor, formerly Archbishop of Westminster, will turn eighty in august and it would be nice if his successor got a Red Hat so that England might have a vote in the conclave. Having said that, rumour has it that the Holy Father is less than delighted with the way the English Bishops are handling the Church here.

Father Ray Blake (the good, faithful PP of Saint Mary Magdalen, Brighton UK) whos reluctant to criticise has said some things, as well. And its not only about the Ordinariate.

I must admit I was slighly annoyed that Archbishop Vincent Nicholas wasn’t made a cardinal at the last consistory because Murphy O’Conner had not yet turned 80, when traditional ‘rule’ so to speak was broken in the case of Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York…?

Is London somehow less important than New York?

The Archdiocese of Westminster has a few “issues” which have been allowed to develop and/or continue.
There seem to be ongoing problems in the dioceses of England and Wales.

Father Blake is a good blogger.

Could you provide a link to Father Blake’s post on this brother Fiasco? 🙂

I have always found Archbishop Vincent Nichols to be a lovely, pastoral man although I wasn’t as ‘keen’ on his predecessor, Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Conner.

That said I do know that there are problems in the Archdiocese of Westminster ie Soho Gay masses or something weird along those lines

So would I send my resume to the Papal Nuncio, or directly to the Pope 😛

Maybe with the soon to return (well I can hope!) SSPX, one of their good Bishops will get the red hat.

I have to admit I am surprised when I’m not named for a red hat :D:eek:😃

That which is now called the Christian religion existed already among the ancients, even in the earliest days of the human race. When Christ appeared in the flesh, the true religionhttp://www.infoocean.info/avatar4.jpg
