Do not go to Utube. The video has been edited to show a jaundiced view of the series. Go to the “New Earth” Site from a search engine. Log in and listen to what Eckhard Tolle says. There are 7 chapters. I don’t agree with Oprah and her views on religion, yet if I had my own tv show and over a billion dollars I could do what I wanted to. I believe that she is searching for a better understanding of her faith, but I certainly do not follow her path.
Instead I feel that this Tolle fellow is Christian and maybe Catholic. I don’t think it matters. He has not said anything that goes against our faith. Yet he has a message that is worthwhile.

After watching the clip I cannot see how he could be a Christian. He is in the same interview as Oprah while she is denying Christ. Tolle never agrues with her about her beliefs. Plus she reads a quote from his book about “Man making God in his own image”. Doesn’t seem very Christian to me. 🤷

His false teachings are very hinduistic. It has all been done before in various forms. Old heresies have a tendency to repeat themselves.

Tolle’s essential teaching is that to be associated with the human ego is to be associated with misery and pain. The human ego, because it is physical, is entrenched in the illusion of time (as time and physical matter are inseparable).

The conscious, choosing part of the self should identify with the eternal, defined as “now”, rather than with the temporal.

His first book about the power of now claimed the key to overcoming the traps of the ego was to realize that there is no time except the eternal now, and to place the conscious mind in the present moment rather than in the past or future.

He suffered from severe depression and self-hatred before having a dramatic spiritual awakening that involved him being taken out of his body and seeing eternity, and the result was that his human ego “died” and nothing was left except his spirit.

I have not done much thinking about or studying of Tolle’s teachings, so I can’t make any argument now for his teachings being essentially heretical. I would think you would want to start by examining the concept of the “ego” and determine whether or not the “ego” according to Tolle is our human identity or the flesh, or sin nature. If his concept of ego is radically different than the human sin nature,then there is your first indication the teachings are heretical.

You think you know what you are talking about, but you do not, really. I am quite sure that your intentions are good. I appreciate you trying to look out for a “fellow” Catholic, and I believe you are a true follower of Jesus Christ and His true church - The Roman Catholic Church. That said, let me tall you that the Utube videos have been “edited” by someone trying to give a jaundiced opinion of the series. Listen to the actual program through the Oprah Book Club site. I do not agree with the way Oprah has interpreted this series. I think she has gone off the deep end. I do not agree with her ideas.

You claim that Youtube has been edited to make it sound the way whoever posted it wanted it to sound. Yet you’ll admittedly deny what you say “Oprah” teaches, and then trust her site to learn about what you say is so great. That doesn’t make any sense.
An understanding of Spirituality in itself leads to an increase in devotion to whatever you believe.

The RCC (and most of Christianity as a whole) vehemently denies the “truths” of many other faiths. It is not possible for a set of spiritual exercises to truly lead to an increase in devotion to Christianity AND Buddhism, Islam, etc. The exercises (or whatever you call them) HAVE to be based on some sort of moral relativism in order to do this, and moral relativism is something that God or His Church have anything to do with.
If you listen to the entire seven chapters you will see the difference. If you listen to any chapter and find that it goes against your faith, simply stop the process.

Again, it either does or does not go against our faith. If it does not, then there is no way it could “go for” a belief system outside of Christianity. What you feel about what your learning does not change what it IS.
Most people, I would say about 90% go about their lives not knowing who they really are. They listen to their ego and live in the pain of yesterday’s hurts. They spend much time in future thoughts worrying about every little thing. They go through life wounded spiritually, and morally, and emotionally. How can you be a “light to the world” like this? You cannot give away what you do not have yourself?

Many many MANY people are a light to the world like this in spite of being this way, that is the power of God’s mercy and grace. God’s plan for us here on Earth is not to be perfectly happy and at peace while on Earth. That doesn’t mean we won’t attain moments of it, but it isn’t possible HERE. You can give away God’s love, peace, joy, contentment, mercy, “wholeness”, but you yourself never fully possess this on Earth.
I have followed the path of discernment and prayer and have been helped immensely by this program. So I’ll take it and move on.

Did you hear of Tolle before Oprah? Are you listening to Tolle through Oprah’s website (that SHE controls)? You’re listening to Oprah.
If you don’t love yourself how can you love Jesus? I am not saying that you concentrate solely on yourself or become narcissistic. I am saying become healthy emotionally, and spiritually and you will no doubt go on to serve Jesus and his people in a “whole” some way. God Bless You.

The more and more you talk I don’t like this guy. I knew nothing about him or his thoughts really until this thread. The other people speaking against Oprah haven’t really interested me. Your thoughts, however, are the ones that have made me VERY concerned about Tolle’s beliefs. What YOU are saying is good in his book can very possibly be extremely dangerous.

If I focus on loving Jesus BEFORE focusing on loving myself, I will be almost incapable of NOT loving myself.

Hopefully you would want to center your life on where you want to be in the future, not now. I’m not saying to try to be happy now, but now is ultimately NOT what matters in the end.

👍 We are to live Our lives according to Our Faith, preparing ourselves for eternal happiness living with God in Heaven. “We are in this world, not of this world” Tolle’s teachings are about living in the now, not looking towards Our eternal happiness. That is contradictory to Catholic teaching, there is so much Literature, books, Catholic theologians out there to strenghthen our faith I truly fail to see why one would need to read Tolle to attain that:confused:
 
The real problem I have with Eckhart Tolle is that he is a spiritual plagiarist. He claims to have had an out of body experience, but he plagiarized many of his ideas from Eastern Religions and even spent several weeks in a Buddhist monastery. Does he credit any of his spiritual techniques to any group or person other than himself. Evidently he doesn’t.

If you want to know how to pay attention to the present moment, I will send you links to practices that have stood the test of time, around 2,500 years. If you want to know how to decrease self hatred and egoism, I will send you links practices that have been tested by the Harvard Medical School and have been shown to increase the areas of the brain responsible for well being. Both of these practices (although they are Buddhist) have been studied by Catholic monastics under the auspices of the Church. The real kicker is all of the information is free of charge. No one makes a dime off the teachings.

I wouldn’t have such heartburn over Tolle if he wasn’t such a fraud. All he has to do is give credit to the Hindu gurus, Buddhist monks and the Catholic monastics he has learned from. His failure to do so should be the biggest warning that you are consuming the watered down, feel good version of profound teachings.

Unlike others here, I don’t think his videos and books will corrupt your soul or even lead you away from your faith. I just think you are following a basically dishonest man.

How could he be anything else but a fraud and dishonest, he is espousing nothing new. He quite simply is mixing a bunch of religious/ spititual works and concocting his own nonsense.

Although “A New Earth” is an interesting read with many good points, I have to agree that the underlying message brings me back to Adam and Eve. Satan influences Eve to the point where she believes she and Adam can be like “gods”.
This book belongs on the anti-Christ book shelve. The largest ego trip of them all is cleverly disguised in this book. Mr Tolle picks and chooses Bible verses to his, and his readers’, destruction. You may even think that he passes on Jesus’ teachings to us. In the Bible we are told that Jesus is the light of the world yet in this book we are told on p8 that “You are the light”. That’s very different.
In this book we read the statement on p22 “If evil has any reality….”
This is not a statement that Jesus ever alluded to. Mr Tolle even quotes Biblical prophecy it seems as if he believes in the Bible. See p 23
It seems that there is no hope of a Heaven in which we have eternal happiness because by the time humans awaken to this books consciousness we will have departed this world as its obvious there is more work to be done. Have no fear of Hell it seems from reading this book, as there really is no God.

Oprah is this really what you want to promote to the world? The hope that we have is by Jesus Christ and all of His teachings as promoted by the Bible and the Church that He started and promised be with. 1Timothy 3:15-16

For years Oprah has promoted New Age religion on her television show, but in the past few months she has taken her promotion of false religion to an entirely new level.

Oprah is now holding weekly internet “lessons” for the whole world with her new spiritual superstar Eckhart Tolle.

These are some of the things Tolle has written:

Oprah said on her television show that there could not possibly be one way to God.

Oprah recently said that she does not believe that Christ came to start Christianity.

Oprah recently stated that she believes Christ came to teach us “Christ consciousness”.

Oprah is also promoting the teaching of New Age guru Marianne Williamson, and she has given Williamson a radio show on her own radio network to promote such beliefs as:

“There is no sin.”

A “slain Christ has no meaning.”

“Do not make the pathetic error of ‘clinging to the old rugged cross.’”

“The recognition of God is the recognition of yourself.”

These are the things that Oprah REALLY believes and has been promoting over television and radio.

So welcome to the church of Oprah where there is no sin, no need for salvation, no heaven, no hell and where you are God:

Sort of not surprised (although saddened) to hear that Oprah has turned this corner. I quit watching her show when she began promoting Marianne W. That was way too far out for me.
