Hi all,
On this the First Sunday of Advent, may I draw everyones attention once more to a verse from one of todays readings:

‘And he shall judge the Gentiles, and rebuke many people: and they shall turn their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into sickles: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they be exercised any more to war.’
(Is 2:4).

Thank you, moderator, for your timely advice.
God Bless,
Colmcille.

Hi colmcille,
May I draw your attention to this:
United States Catholic Catechism for Adults No. 29:
Pages 390 & 391
Self-defense against an unjust aggressor is morally permitted. There is also a moral duty for the defense of others by those who are responsible for their lives. Self-defense or the defense of others has the goal of protecting the person or persons threatened.

Once the threat is eliminated, no further action is required. In such situations, the deliberate killing of the aggressor can be permitted only when no other solution is possible (cf. CCC, no. 2265). Any response to aggression must be proportionate to the nature of the threat or the act of aggression.

“The prohibition of murder does not abrogate the right to render an unjust aggressor unable to inflict harm.” (cf. CCC 2261) page 400.

Hi stan,

‘Rejoice with them that rejoice; weep with them that weep.
Being of one mind one towards another. Not minding high things, but consenting to the humble. Be not wise in your own conceits.
To no man rendering evil for evil. Providing good things, not only in the sight of God, but also in the sight of all men.
If it be possible, as much as is in you, have peace with all men.’
(Romans 12:15 - 18).

God Bless,
Colmcille.

‘Declare this among the nations: proclaim a war, rouse the warriors to arms! Let all the soldiers report and march!
Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears; let the weak man say, “I am a warrior!” Hasten and come, all you neighboring peoples, assemble there! (Bring down, O Lord, your warriors!)’ (Joel 4:9)

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

To everything there is a season,
and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

A time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

A time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;

A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

A time to cast away stones,
and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

A time to get, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

A time to rend, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

A time to love, and a time to hate;
a time of war, and a time of peace.

You know Colmcille,

I think understand where you’re coming from and agree with it.

I’m here to tell you I hate war, fighting, violence, because I’ve seen it live man, and where you’re from you probably have too.

I think that people that go to pubs and fight are stupid if you don’t get paid to be a professional fighter why do it? You will find that the majority of professional soldiers don’t fight, yeah I did it as a dumb Private but I was not a professional at that time. Professional soldiers like law enforcement officers don’t fight they take out the threat.

I tell you I will run away from a fight! People can call me coward all day long I still have my two eyes—if this is what you call turning the other cheek; well I’ve done it for years.

God forbid I’ve never killed an American but if someone breaks into my home puts my family in danger I will do everything humanly possible to take out the threat.

I’m a CHL holder in the State of Texas and trained in the use of deadly force and as a Catholic I know human life is precious I would never use deadly force lightly.

I will yell my head off to the person, “Get out or I will shoot!” If the person comes forward I will aim for center mass and shoot—not to kill but to take out the threat.

I believe I understand where you’re coming from I hope you understand where I’m coming from?

May the Lord be with you—Stan.

Hi Stan,
I fully respect where you are coming from and I thank you sincerely for your posts.
I look forward to chatting with you here on all sorts of topics. This one has certainly been an education for me.
It’s great that Catholics can exchange views on this forum and get valuable insights into not only the standpoint of our great Faith but, because it is the one true Faith, into the human condition as well.
God Bless you my friend,
Colmcille.

Thanks Colmcille,
After all we are one family as you know family members disagree all the time I have brother who is a diehard Democrat I’m just the opposite but I still love the misguided guy.

Hi all,
Okay so it’s off-topic but why would anyone want three guns in the first place?
I do not understand the love of guns. Is there a much-needed time in man’s future when his heart will be cleansed of the violent impulse?
God Bless,
Colmcille.
Two shotguns (one for hunting small game and birds, the other for home defense), three rifles (one for varmints, one for big game, and one for the kids to shoot), and a pistol for protection on the street.

Why would anyone think they need to limit my peaceful ownership and use of guns?

So, in addition to being the highest taxed state, NJ residents now have another reason for moving somewhere else: excessive and overzealous gun prosecutions.

Hey what are you trying to do introduce facts—gun grabbers don’t base taking you guns with facts—it’s emotion about taking law abiding citizens rights away. 😦
The thing that bugs me most is that this is a perfectly CLEAR laid out constitutional right. And they are STILL trying to take it away. I just can’t believe this country anymore. 😦

It’s insane isn’t it? Heck in NYC you have to have a permit just to have a gun in your home! :eek:

Illinois and Wisconsin are two other States that is out of control with anti-gun laws.

Of course on the bright side it does help out the crooks. :banghead:

I’ll say this again lesson learned; in NJ don’t call the cops!!!

Governor of NJ commutes Aitken’s sentence to time served:

lucianne.com/thread/?artnum=585475
Thank you for posting I was going to post this good news but got busy at work today. Statement from the NRA:

**N.J. Governor Chris Christie Commutes Gun Owner’s Prison Sentence – NRA Hails Decision, Calls for Real Reform **

Tuesday, December 21, 2010

Fairfax, Va. –The National Rifle Association praised New Jersey Governor Chris Christie for commuting the prison sentence of Brian Aitken—a gun owner who was arrested, convicted and imprisoned for illegal possession of firearms, even though he had made every effort to comply with New Jersey’s restrictive and confusing laws. The NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund supported Mr. Aitken’s case.

“On behalf of the 4 million members of the National Rifle Association of America, I would like to thank Governor Christie for freeing Brian Aitken in time to spend the holiday with his family,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action.

Mr. Aitken was convicted last year of illegal possession of firearms, following a trial in which the judge refused to let the jury hear about exceptions in the law that allow possession of firearms without a license, while moving to a new residence. Mr. Aitken was sentenced to a seven-year prison term even though he had lawfully purchased and owned the firearms.

“While Governor Christie’s grant of clemency was absolutely the right thing to do, Brian Aitken’s case is just one example of how New Jersey’s ridiculous gun laws turn law-abiding gun owners into criminals,” added Cox. “There is a serious need to reform New Jersey’s gun laws so that the full weight of the state’s law enforcement and legal system falls squarely on the shoulders of criminals, not on people like Brian Aitken.”

-NRA-

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America’s oldest civil rights and sportsmen’s group. Four million members strong, NRA continues its mission to uphold Second Amendment rights and to advocate enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. The Association remains the nation’s leader in firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the military.
