A nude Picture

I see the pic. It is not pornographic and I was not sexually or intellectually stimulated. I don’t know that I would call it beauty or not. Is it radiant? Is there wholeness? Harmony?

well then we just disagree. I’ll concede those sistine chapel sibyls lack as much beauty as is possible while remaining on this side of h. sapiens.

so at least link your pic so we can evaluate it fairly.

You know I can’t remember where I got it. I can’t post it cause it contains nudity I’m really sorry. If anyone wants a copy perhaps I could mail it?

Not really. When I looked at that painting I couldn’t recognize the background too well. I think it was mountains or reflections in the water. Maybe both.

Do you know the name of the painting? That way those who wish to can look it up themselves without you actually posing it here on CAF.
 
The feminine form is the most beautiful part of God’s creation.

I’m sorry to pick on you, but this kind of response is actually not a very helpful one. While it is true that sometimes people question the morality of something because they are trying to justify sinning, it is also true that sometimes they are being overly scrupulous. If it is a matter of them being scrupulous then the above advice is actually extremely detrimental to them as it will feed into their scrupulosity. While I do not believe the OP is scrupulous, I just think that, in general, this advice is very bad advice to give to an anonymous person on the internet as it is very possible that it will be harmful to them.
 
I must have missed the post where the OP talks about how he was intellectually stimulated. What was intellectually gratifying about the picture? How did it help you intellectually?

Lastly, maybe the OP could consult with their parish priest/spiritual director.
 
I think it depends. Personally, I’ve never felt any lust from a painting. If I look at “The Birth of Venus” for example, I feel nothing in that way. But I don’t have a particular good sense for the visual arts, though I do like the Impressionists.

But as to whether its sinful, I don’t think it has to be, but of course it could be. For example, I remember when I was a teenager, there was a certain girl I had a crush on, and I thought she was beautiful but I couldn’t have brought myself to think of her sexually even if I wanted to, because I had put her on a pedestal in my mind.

Also, a man knows when his, to quote Boswell, “amorous propensities” are being stirred, as there is a definite physiological response. So if your not having that sort of problem, I don’t think it is an issue.

Ah, I get it. It’s just, when people say that art gives intellectual pleasure, they’re usually referring to Plato. But maybe I just like to push philosophy on people because it’s one of my interests.

Yes and I am trying to go by Aristotle and Aquinus in particular here when it comes to beauty. All keep in mind too. There is beauty in inanimate objects if you could learn to see it I think. God’s creation is full of beauty.

I think it’s an interesting/artsy depiction of the human body.

I can see a big picture like this posted up on a wall of a plastic surgeon’s office or a cosmetic’s office or massage therapy, dermatology, etc etc.
 
Exodus 20:3-4
3 “You shall have no other gods before[a] me.
4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

If you’re holding onto an image to get some satisfaction apart from God, then it does fall into this line. I would suggest to let go of what’s hard to let go, and let God fill that void. He’s a jealous God.
 
The human body reflects the beauty of God. The problem is that a beautiful landscape, a gorgeous animal or a magic forest don’t stir in us the reproductive instinct, and I don’t think is necessary to remind people of all the problems that instinct can cause. Hope this help.
