It might be worth noting that the letters to St Catherine’s Monastery and the Assyrians are not mentioned in the hadiths or sira.

St Catherine’s Monastery says the original letter was taken away to the Topkapi Museum by Selim I in 1517 and a copy left in the monastery. There is only one oblique photo on the web - without the definition to make judgment on its authenticity - but it is suspicious that this letter is not mentioned in the hadiths and sira.
 
I believe this letter to be a pious fraud committed by the monks to protect themselves against marauding Muslims.

The story doesn’t seem credible to me. In 625, the monks went to see Muhammad in Medina and in 628, Muhammad sent the letter.

Why would the monks from Mt Sinai go all the way to Medina to seek ‘protection’ from Muhammad who only ruled Medina in those days?
 
Unless someone can show concrete evidence and not speculation, then we have to assume that the letters from Mohammad are accurate and truthful.

We do not have to assume anything.

None of the Islamic caliphates ever heard of this ‘letter’ since they prohibited the repair of churches.

This is the clause in the letter even the Righteous Caliphs ignored:
Their churches are to be respected. They are neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their covenants.

Rather suspicious to me.
