"Be mindful, O Lord, that mercy and kindness have been yours from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth" (Psalm 25:6-7).
Reflection:
A woman wrote of her abortion, “It was very painful, physically and mentally. It affected me in the worst way. I felt very guilty. I couldn’t look at any kids. I know I won’t ever do it again.” Those getting an abortion think it will solve their problems, and they find out it only creates more of them.
Prayer: Lord, show us how to reach out to those who have had abortions, and how to understand their pain. Bring us all to healing. Amen.

"Such attacks strike human life at the time of its greatest frailty, when it lacks any means of self-defense. Even more serious is the fact that, most often, those attacks are carried out in the very heart of and with the complicity of the family—the family which by its nature is called to be the ‘sanctuary of life’ "(John Paul II, The Gospel of Life, n.11).
Reflection:
Not all sins against life are the same. Context matters. Greater dependence calls for greater protection. The family setting implies greater compassion.
Prayer: God of the family, Lord of the frail, may compassion and protection overflow from your heart to ours! Amen.

"Among all the crimes which can be committed against life, procured abortion has characteristics making it particularly serious and deplorable …But today, in many people’s consciences, the perception of its gravity has become progressively obscured" (John Paul II, The Gospel of Life, n.58).
Reflection:
A woman who saw the photos of aborted babies wrote, “OH MY GOSH. I just read your entire web page. OH MY GOSH is all I can really say out loud. I have seen articles and read about abortions before-but I still felt like it was the woman’s decision. My mind was changed TODAY.”
Prayer: Lord, grant light and conversion to all about abortion . Amen.

"Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you…" (Matthew 28:20).
Reflection:
Pro-abortion politicians will often say to us, “Abortion is the law of the land.” But the “law of the land” can be changed, just as it was changed regarding slavery and segregation. The law of the land is meant to protect the good of the people. Because imperfect people make the law of the land, they sometimes make mistakes, and allow things which experience later proves are not good for the people. That’s why the law can be changed.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, come and renew the face of the earth, and make us agents of change. Amen.

"The human person is the measure of the dignity of work"Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church"
Reflection: The Church teaches that work has its final goal in the human person. In other words, people are not to be considered as just cogs in a wheel of productivity. Work exists for people, not the other way around. It is an expression of the person and builds up his or her dignity. This is a key conviction in a Culture of Life.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Amen.

"If we allow a mother to kill her own child, how can we tell people not to kill each other?" – Mother Teresa of Calcutta
Reflection:
Mother Teresa died on this day in 1997. She saw in each person – no matter how sick or depraved –the image of God. She spoke boldly to those in power about the evil of abortion. In her Nobel Peace Prize lecture, she said that the greatest destroyer of peace is abortion. She led women by the arm away from abortion clinics and toward alternatives. Let us honor her by imitating her.
Prayer: Mother Teresa, pray for us, that we may defend life as you did. Amen.

"You will show me the path to life; you will fill me with joy in your presence" (Psalm 16:11).
Reflection:
Many men and women who have lost children to abortion are speaking publicly about their sin and forgiveness through the Silent No More Awareness Campaign (a project of Priests for Life and Anglicans for Life). This campaign shows the harm abortion does, leads people to healing, and reveals the power and mercy of Christ. There is no reason to be locked in sin, shame, and silence.
Prayer: Lord, bless all the men and women who are speaking out about their abortion experiences. Thank you for their courage. Amen.

Lord God, I thank you today for the gift of my life,
And for the lives of all my brothers and sisters.
I know there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion,
Yet I rejoice that you have conquered death
by the Resurrection of Your Son.
I am ready to do my part in ending abortion.
Today I commit myself
Never to be silent,
Never to be passive,
Never to be forgetful of the unborn.
I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement,
And never to stop defending life
Until all my brothers and sisters are protected,
And our nation once again becomes
A nation with liberty and justice
Not just for some, but for all,
Through Christ our Lord. Amen!

"All of them look to you to give them their food at the appropriate time" (Psalm 104:27).
Reflection:
One of the myths that was used to kill Terri Schiavo was the idea that food and water are medical treatments. But when we come back from a meal, we don’t say, “I just had my latest medical treatment.” Rather, we say, “I had breakfast, lunch, or dinner.” Food and water are ordinary means of care which may not be taken away from the sick.
Prayer: Lord, I pray today for all who need assistance to receive nourishment. Protect them and surround them with people who will treat them with care. Amen.

"She was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 1:18).
Reflection:
Today we celebrate the Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary, chosen by God to be his own mother. In our day, we need Mary’s presence and example more than ever, because so many mothers are afraid to be mothers, and so many opinion-makers in our society have forgotten what motherhood really means.
Prayer: Mary, pray for all who are pregnant and afraid, especially those tempted to abort their child. Pray that they find new hope and strength to say “Yes” to God’s plan as you did. Amen.

"She and her whole household had been baptized" (Acts 16:15).
Reflection:
When we baptize a baby, it proves that God chooses us before we choose him. Moreover, all the members of the Church extend their hearts and arms in welcome of that new life. Baptism shows that we are always called to give a welcoming “Yes” to life, and never the harsh “no” of abortion. The so-called “prochoice” message is that we choose whom we will care for. Baptism teaches us that we are responsible for those whom God has chosen first.
Prayer: Lord, I welcome each and every person you have chosen to create. May they share your life abundantly. Amen.

“If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, then the one who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit that dwells in you” (Rom.8:11).
Reflection: The Holy Spirit gives life, bringing forth creation at the beginning of time, descending upon Mary to bring about the Incarnation, bringing about the Eucharist from mere bread and wine, and descending upon the graves of God’s people to raise them from the dead.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, come and work through your people to build the Culture of Life. Keep us close to you; fill us with yourself. Amen.

"Deliver us from the evil one" (Matthew 6:13).
Reflection:
The evil of September 11, 2001 was not simply that lives were lost, but that some human beings had a blatant contempt for the right of other human beings to live. The same contempt for human life is found in every abortion clinic. What moral difference does it make if a victim is five feet tall or five inches tall, or if the instrument of death is an airplane or surgical forceps? The evil we fight is a reflection of the evil we do.
Prayer: Lord, on this sad anniversary, I resolve to defend all life, whatever threatens it. Amen.

"You will be my treasured possession" (Exodus 19:5).
Reflection:
Dr. James McMahon was an abortionist in Southern California and performed partial-birth abortions. When asked by the American Medical Association news how he justified doing it, he admitted that the baby was a child, but then said there was a more important question, “Who owns the child? It’s got to be the mother,” he explained.
Prayer: Lord, nobody but you is the owner of human life – no doctor, no state, not even a mom or dad. Keep us humble; keep us mindful that we are servants, and that you alone are our Master. Amen.

“In this way democracy, contradicting its own principles effectively moves towards a form of totalitarianism. The State is no longer the “common home” where all can live together on the basis of principles of fundamental equality, but is transformed into a tyrant State, which arrogates to itself the right to dispose of the life of the weakest and most defenseless members” (John Paul II, The Gospel of Life, n.20).
Reflection: Some see laws permitting abortion as a minor flaw; the Pope is saying here that they change the very nature of the state.
Prayer: Lord, free us from the tyranny of governments that think they can dispose of human life. Amen.
