Yes, a priest is always a priest.
But, unless he is under a bishop and has proper faculties from said bishop, He is not allowed to perform
priestly duties for anyone but himself.

There are nine days until the feast of Saint Monica (August 27). Perhaps all of us who have been following notsmart’s (Monica’s) story can join in a novena for Monica, her husband, and daughter.
Prayer to Saint Monica
Saint Monica, you know the struggle of those who seek to live by faith. By your example and prayers, you led your husband and your son into the way of faith. The difficulties of life did not diminish your confidence in God or your prayer. Pray for me and for all whose faith is tested that we may trust in God and not be overwhelmed or discouraged by life’s bruises but may live in faith and proclaim your generous love in word and deed. Amen.

That sounds like a fantastic idea!!! I’m in šŸ™‚

This morning my husband called me from work. He said he found the ideal situation for us all. One of his coworkers has a Pastor that was a Catholic Priest. My husband told me, he did some research and a Catholic Priest is always a Catholic Priest no matter what. Apparently, this Priest left the Priesthood because he wanted to get married. So, my husband thinks I should get in touch with him, and get us (5yr old and myself) baptised by him and skip all the ā€œcatholic junkā€ that will be required if I go the normal route.

I was wondering where he got this ā€œresearchā€ and it hardly sounds correct to me. Does anyone know what he is talking about? It sounds sneaky, and probably sinful to do that.

?
If that is the case why don’t your just baptise each other. A baptism does not require a priest to be valid. ANYONE can baptise as long as they are intending to baptise.

Huh? Why would you give her that advice?

Bad bad bad idea, unless there’s certainty of death.

You really need to change your username. ā€œnotsmartā€ just doesn’t cut it! You are very smart! May God smooth your path.

My head is exploding.😦
Uh-huh. You have a lot on your shoulders right now. Turmoil. If it’s any comfort, you are not the first. Seek good counsel from a holy priest. They are often skilled in the pastoral issues involved in these things.

Perhaps the OP has a better ability than you to recognise sarcasm. no?
Sarcasm is more difficult to detect in print than it is in person. I have a hard enough time recognizing it face to face! (I’m very gullible.šŸ™‚ )

Notsmart (sorry, I have a hard time with your name you can’t be notsmart) anyway, here’s my story and experience. My husband considers himself agnostic. He really didn’t care if we got married in the church or not so we did. Admittedly I was an uninformed Catholic and felt that hey, I did my part I got married in the Church so that was all I needed to do. My marriage was a very secular one for years. Finally the Holy Ghost hit me over the head with a sledge hammer and I got my butt back to the Church. This turned my husband’s world upside down. It was rough for a while. He still does not attend Mass with us and still is obstinate in his refusal to even acknowledge God, but he has accepted my devotion to my faith. I was told by a very good preist during the rough spots that if I put his needs above those of God’s then I validate his belief that he is more powerful than God and has no need of Him, but if I show through my actions that God is so importantant to me that I will not hide or put off my devotion to Him, then I demonstrate God’s true power. I guess what I’m saying is that God will bring you to Him and maybe he is using you to bring your husband too. I heard a priest also say that even if someone rejects God his whole life, if he repents and makes an honest an request to be brought into God’s family even on his deathbed, he may find his salvation.
If no one has recommended looking into St Monica, I would look to her (Monica is my confirmation name for a reason:) . I wish you the best and hope that you will hang in there for you, your daughter and your husband.

Yes, wow.

Early in my marriage I was too timid to mention God much at home (I too have an agnostic husband). I guess I was putting what I perceived to be my husband’s needs ahead of God. I think my daughters’ faith formation may have suffered.

I started taking my faith more seriously eight years ago, and my husband has been amazingly tolerant (although he is still not a believer).

Let’s keep Saint Monica busy!

Monica, and all my friends here, I woke up at 3:00am to find these encouraging words.
Yes, wow.

I have been off line, because I am really focusing on the parts of the advice the priest gave me (that seem to be more time consuming each day, but they are an adventure)

I just felt like saying thank you, and I missed you for all sorts of questions I have had but, I can come back and ask. I hope so.

Tonight was a good night. My daughter asked daddy to pray with her to tell Jesus she is happy. He gave me that look, of confusion mixed with sadness, but ultimately joined her.
t
She noted he did not say Amen, at the end of the prayer they said.

She told him Amen means ā€œyou really mean itā€

I had to google Amen. And what it really means.

She’s so cute!

He actually was disturbed by it. I think he googled it too.šŸ™‚

What a beautiful story! Thanks for sharing. Children are amazing, in their trust, and simplicity, and spontaneity, and humility. They don’t get all complicated, they just speak the truth as they see it. It reminds me of Jesus’ words:
At that time the disciples approached Jesus and said, ā€œWho is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?ā€ He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, ā€œAmen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.ā€ (Matthew 18:1-4)
Perhaps God will use your daughter to lead your husband to Himself.

Three a.m.? Three o’clock is the ā€œhour of mercyā€ – OK: that’s 3:00 p.m. – but on the other side of the world, it IS 3:00 a.m.!

That is so beautiful… I’m actually tearing up a little bit šŸ™‚ God Bless your daughter.

notsmart (Monica, I think?) Anyway, just to help you keep the faith a bit, it’s been 5, almost 6 years since I came back to the church. In that time my husband and I lost our 10 year old daughter. I am positive that God, knowing what was in store for us led me bak to Him. Unfortunately, it didn’t do the same for my husband that I know of. I emphasize that part because I really don’t know what is in his heart. I do know that I insisted on the kids and I saying grace before dinner and I told him he does not have to, but I asked that he just be respectful of us and wait until we are finished to start eating. Now he not only says it with us (very quietly) but also makes the sign of the cross. He will even say it with the kids if I’m not home for dinner. Also when he was deployed to Iraq, he went to the Ministry building and picked up a pocket Catholic prayer book and put it in his pocket every day. He said he read the prayers too ( I didn’t tell him he was praying, just said oh!šŸ˜‰ . Recently we were looking at his military file and I noticed he had his religion listed as Catholic so I commented that wouldn’t it be nice to make that true? I told him I knew someone he could talk to ( thinking my priest) and he said I do too, Pierre (my Dad). I was really shocked. I know my husband loves my Dad and since my husband’s Dad is not a Christian either, I figured my husband must have really thought about who he would want to talk to about it. Really long story, but I just want you to know that it may come in the most unbelievably small steps, but always be hoping and praying for him. Ultimately, it would be much harder for him to have a change of heart (although not impossible) if you don’t.

Sorry another long post. But I just identify with your situation so much.
