A Question About Doing Manual Work on Sundays

I’m a musician (and music teacher). I will not schedule lessons on a Sunday, however, I often have paying gigs on Sundays, so that makes it something I cannot get out of. Fortunately, it does not happen very often; maybe 10 times per yr (but it can vary).

I could not survive as a serious musician if I refused to play with my orchestra on a Sunday concert. We usually give the same concert on Sat. and then again the next day.

But what about church musicans? I used to get paid, but then my circumstances changed and I didn’t need the money as desparately, so I don’t charge my parish for accompanying the choir. My dh is choir director, and he does not get paid either. Volunteering has its advantages; for one, you can’t get fired!

g’night and God bless,
Mimi

Mimi,

I’m sure the Choir of Angels also sing on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. Sending music up to the Lord is certainly by no means considered as “work” as we know work to be. “Sing to the Lord oh my soul”. Hey, just because one gets paid for doing work on the Sabbath doesn’t mean they are violating the teaching. Our Priests get paid for what they do, right? And don’t anyone tell me, or any of your priests, that what priests do is not considered work!! True, they are working for God - but I am sure God also smiles down on those of us who must do certain jobs on Sunday’s to keep our households going, when this work can not be done on other days. Remember, The Sabbath was made for man, not the man for the sabbath.

I believe doing hard or even menial labor on the Sabbath, when that work could be done on other days, may be classified as a sin, unless, under certain circumstances, it could not be helped.

Mimi, sing away unto the Lord and be joyful.

What makes you think the Sabbath is Sunday.

Richard,

Discription of Sabbath from various dictionaries:

"Quick definitions (Sabbath)

Discription of the Sabbath from God; Gen:20:8-11

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

General Reminder:

This discussion has strayed from its original topic of whether doing manual work on Sundays is sinful. Please return to the original topic under discussion and feel free to start a new thread/s for non-OP topics. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

A long time ago as a teenager, I actually told in confession that I did household chores on Sunday because my mother told me to! The priest answered, “Do what your mother and father tell you to!” As an adult, I realize that there are certain things that need to be done every day, and do not hesitate to ask my children to help.
