“All who escape eternal damnation do so through Mary’s powerful intercession…”
– St. Bonaventure
I saw this quote posted on Twitter and it raised a question I’d like a little insight on:
What about the people who lived before Mary? If the only way to escape eternal damnation is through Mary’s intercession, they must be lost. Mary was human. She did not exist prior to her conception. Therefore she could not have interceded for anyone until she was taken up into Heaven. (She could have interceded for some during her life but it’s hard to believe that she was able to intercede for all.)
Does Mary intercede for everyone? If not, who decides who she intercedes for? If she does intercede for everyone, how can we say that all her prayers are answered? (I’m not sure that the belief that all her prayers are answered is a doctrine but I’ve heard people say that.) The Bible is clear. God wishes everyone to be saved (2 Pet 3:9) so Mary’s prayer for a person to escape Hell is a prayer according to God’s will. However the majority of people are on their way to Hell (Matt 7:13-14).
