I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church and that all who are baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are members of that church.
It is a matter of great sorrow that all of us who are members of that church don’t act as though we are united within it.

All others are (usually) well-meaning schismatics who have fragmented the Church Christ began.

I have always liked the way the Catechism of the Catholic Church sums up this teaching:
870 “The sole Church of Christ which in the Creed we profess to be one, holy, catholic, and apostolic, . . . subsists in the Catholic Church, which is governed by the successor of Peter and by the bishops in communion with him. Nevertheless, many elements of sanctification and of truth are found outside its visible confines”(LG 8).

Except that we are not ONE. We differ in beliefs and practices. Many churches do not even recognize the sacraments, most especially the Eucharist. There is only one that I know of (and I included Eastern Orthodox in this) that can claim they are Apostolic and that would be the Catholic Church. There is only one that I klnow of that is universal (catholic) and that would be the Catholic Church as well. I know many Protestants that I would consider “holy”, but the Catholic Church derives its holiness from its founder and head; Christ.
While we should all desire unity, “acting” as if we are united does not make us united. We should strive for Truth, the truth handed down to us by the Apostles. Then we will be united and become One. Unitl then, we’re just pretending.

Does anyone other than me notice that this thread became a chance for Catholics to jump on Protestants, despite the innocent sounding question that started it?
To my Protestant friends, there is no way you could have answered this question without being attacked. I am one Roman Catholic who is very sorry for that.
By the way, as long as the fundamentalist fringe of the Catholic Church continues to attack Protestants, they should not be surprised that the fundamentalist fringe of the Protestant Church will attack Catholics. Were we to sit down and talk like true brothers and sisters in Christ, we might find that we are truly ONE CHURCH with a lot of misunderstandings among us.
I am one very happy Roman Catholic who expects to enjoy eternity in Heaven with both Catholics and Protestants who loved and served our Lord.

Yeah, it is. I disagree with it, and my reasons dont need to be extrapolated here, but you could make the argument that it was necessary for the correction of the Church.
PLUS, I find that some Catholics are brought back to earth from their “ecstasies of devotion” by the grounding effect being forced to explain your devotions has on them.

Those who would believe false teachings of fallible men like Luther (justification by grace through faith alone?) which is in direct contradiction with what Jesus taught us, are well meaning but just plain wrong.

Thank you for your kind words. I was a Protestant Pastor for 45 years. Through study and prayer, I was drawn toward the Roman Catholic Church through the years. I probably would have converted sooner had it not been for a few very loud and unkind Catholics who were trying to lead me faster that the Lord was leading me. They did not want to give me enough time to understand what God was doing in my life.
It was hard to convert at a time when the Roman Catholic Church was in the middle of a terrible sex scandal. Thank God for some kind Priests, Religious and laity who understood me and loved me. They acceped me as a brother in Christ long before I was Confirmed into the Catholic Church.
Now I am very happy in the Catholic Church. I pray that God may give you that same JOY as you follow Him.

You will note that I referred to the church in the singular. All who are baptized are members of the one church. The Catholic Church itself acknowledges as it accepts as valid baptisms performed in other church bodies.
We may not agree on what constitutes faithful membership in the one church but we are all, through our baptisms, part of it.
