@Super Wimp, concerning Jesus, going off the top of my head I seem to recall Him mentioning “eternal” in regards to the afterlife, not to mention the Jewish tradition of no reincarnation.

Your allowing present day interpretations of words to cloud your understanding of what the bible writers meant when certain words were used.
JN 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

Life eternal has nothing to do with the afterlife.  The fact that we are in physical bodies is not what's separating us from eternal life.  We can have eternal life while we are in our present experience.

Many jews in the past believed in gilgul which is a version of reincarnation.

The human population of the world is growing. There are also times when it shrinks a little. So do reincarnationists believe more human souls are being created when the population grows? That human souls are “put on hold” when it shrinks? (Or that those are times people “break out” of the reincarnation cycle.) Or something else?

There are about 60 billions human souls in existence and only 7 billion of them in incarnation at this time. So there are plenty of souls waiting in line to be born as the earth’s population grows. If the population shrinks, there will be more of them waiting. In most cases, the place where they are waiting is ‘heaven’, but some of them could be waiting in ‘hell’ (people like Saddam Hussein etc may be waiting there a long time).

Once you are completely enlightened (after thousands of lives), you do not need to reincarnate any more. You can read more about it here: sentforlife.com/death.html
