Part of that deal is that they have made the regular sizes larger over the years, so they had to go below zero to accommodate the tinier sizes. The size 14 of 1970 is more like a size 10 today, so the size 2 of today would be like yesteryear’s size 6. I guess they sold more clothes making us full-figured girls believe that we were fitting into a smaller size. It’s nice to think that I wore a 16 in high school but only wear a 14 now, never mind that it’s 35 years later and I’m 30 pounds heavier! 😛
Yes, it’s all “vanity sizing”. The effect is even more startling if you go back before the 1970s, and into the 50s and 60s. As a teenager, I was extremely skinny, but tall and big-boned, and wore a size 14. If I had those same measurements today, I would wear a size 6. The petite gals who wore a size 6 back then would need a -2 today.

Regarding today’s commercials, I hardly ever see them. The minute a commercial break begins, I grab the remote and switch the channel (if you’re concerned about switching to a channel that just has another offensive ad, then switch to EWTN).

I only ever watch the commercial if it’s something I want to see, like cat food ads with cute cats, or the GEICO cavemen. 😃

Again. I don’t have cable/satelite. You have to have those to use a DVR

You write to them and tell them you’re not going to buy their products or watch their shows unless they straighten up.

How’s that giving them free publicity?
Again, might as well toss the entire tv.
Seriously, that’s a lot of mail to send out.
Not to mention a lot of time involved.
Then there’s the simple fact that you can’t complain until you’ve already seen it.
Whereas with the shows, I can read an excerpt and simply never see it.

I’m okay with tossing the tv out.
Dh is not.

Actually, I’m pretty darned confident they (being wealthy landowners) would have been rather fond of those companies and you can bet they wanted to protect their money.

However, the results, thankfully, is that EVERYONE is entitled to the same freedom. Even if they are tacky and stupid.

And don’t kid yourself. They had porn back then too.

I’m not for any of that stuff, but in a free country, people are entitled to write, create, and say what as they want.

Besides that, I think the biggest way to make a point is with money. Take away their money. I have that option with the shows. Simply don’t watch them.

There is no such option at this time for the commercials though, unless you toss the entire tv.
I see your point. Yeah they had porn back then too, but they were not plastering it in every corner of society. I agree that “money talks” to these folks! I would like to see todays society develop even a “liberal” mosdesty. Even that would be better than what we have now. I dont believe in censorship persay, but I wouldnt mind the “powers that be” to corral those adult themed commercial or shows to a later time in the day whereas to allow most of the airtime to be “Family friendly”. I know, I expect toooo much!!😊

I thought a person could buy a DVR unit without having cable or satellite? It would probably be a pricey spend if you’re not all that interested in TV.

Check out tivo.com

I was just there and they have options for using their system without cable or satellite. You pay upfront for the box $100 and $12.95-16.95 per month for the service. The service doesn’t give you channels (those come through your antenna) but it lists available programs, etc. So, for that money it might be a good compromise.

I’m old-school. I feel if you’re going to complain, then do something about it.

You can toss out your tv but that won’t protect anyone else. What about all the innocent kids who are being corrupted by what should never be aired in a decent society?

 wow that’s a lot of money to pay to NOT watch something!

There comes a point when parents have to think for themselves.

We don’t live in a police state, yet, and I can’t police other people’s kids.

Thank goodness. Because I sure don’t want anyone else thinking they can police MY kids either!

I don’t think that argument washes. As Catholics some of us are called upon to fight corruption wherever we see it.

Complacency and a 'let-someone-else-do-it" attitude is what got this culture in its current vile state.

Now it’s these stupid V____ commercials.

"Being safe is important to me."
"Because I have genital herpes."
"I want to know I’ve done all I can to prevent spreading genital herpes to my partner."

*** paraphrased announcer voice in the background…***
gential herpes is spread 70% of the time from partners that did not have a visible outbreak

v____ does not prevent the spread of STDs
it only reduces the risk of spreading genital herpes
v_____ is not a cure

WELL FOR BLOOMING CRYING OUT LOUD
TRY NOT HAVING S*X THEN!
I totally agree. My favorite part is the end:
Guy: I still have genital herpes.
Girl: And I still don’t.
Guy: And now we’re doing more to keep it that way.

I agree that parents have to think for themselves!! BUT~ today’s society is SO FULL of filth at every turn, that I am beginning to wonder if I will have to blindfold dd just to go to wal mart!!! In this day and age, society is led to believe that it is “ok” to be immodest, permiscuios, selfish, ect and they believe they have the “right” to put whatever trash they feel like out there no matter what, the “I’m gonna do what ever I want and nobody better stop me” attitude. Is it just me or is any one else tired of seeing commercials (print and tv) that express NOTHING but sex??? I mean it is EVERYWHERE!!!🤷 🤷

That’s a twist of my words.

I think parents should parent their own kids and no one else has the right to do it.

Yes, we are called to call sins as we see them.
After that, people have the freewill to sin or not.
Yes, we are called to avoid sin.
Which means we all fight in different ways.
For me, I’d be content with just tossing the tv.
To me, this is no different than books.
I toss the offending book.
I don’t write the author and tell them not to write any more.
The publisher gets the message when people don’t buy the book and they take that into consideration when reviewing writers’ materials.

🤷

Censorship is a slipperly slope I don’t want to slide on.

For me, it’s a question of that slippery slope.
Where’s the line and who gets to draw it?
What’s the alternative?
Telling people they have to have a dress code to enter the public domain? And how to we enforce it? Fines for collarbones showing? Jail for mid-drifts? Duct-tape for unpleasant or offensive language?

Again.
I’m not for any of those things.

**But I think actions and money speak far louder than legislation.🤷 **

My child got a strawberry shortcake DVD as a present. For those of you who know about that, you will understand my SHOCK when the very first promo before the movie starts is a violent purse snatching scene! Its terrifying, and so is the dramatic music in the backround.

My kid looks at me and shrieks mommy stop it! this is not a good movie its very very bad! I was frozen solid in shock therefore my delay in stopping it.

I sent it back to the manufacturer and asked them why little kids need this in their movies. No reply yet. Its not like they are making money with this in there. I just cant figure it out.

I’m simply suggesting that all it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing.

This is how we have come to such a ‘progesssive’ society. The other side’s had it all their way for decades. Time to take back the airwaves.

It takes energy to complain. Might as well do it to those who put the stuff out.

didn’t say to do nothing.
**said to toss the tv out!👍 **
seriously.
one day dh is going to walk in the door and there will be a sofa where there once was a tv when he left that morning.

Well, if it’s a reasonably modern set (digital tuner) your can go through the setup menus and disable access to certain channels.

Most sets have a “auto-scan” feature that zips through the airwaves and loads whatever station the set can pull in (regardless of signal quality)… you can go into setup and “disable” whatever stations you want from the “auto-scan”.

This won’t “block” access to the station if you manually punch in the station number on the remote, but if you use the “Channel up/down” button it will just access the loaded channels (skipping the ones deleted).

I suggest putting a fishtank in the TV’s place…

👍

I really did not have in mind dress codes~ I should have made my thought a little clearer…I was refering to mostly ads (as in magazines)…at the check out counter, sometimes they are just one step above porn. I think that if advertisers sometimes would be more morally appropriate, maybe , over time, would change society’s moral thinking and society would up their “morality” threshhold??? Society has become soooo very desensitized that they have lost all sense of decency and morality…just my 2 cents!!

My oldest is just getting to the age (3) where he notices things and is starting to ask questions. We are having to be even more careful with what he watches now. We can’t have the TV on any “normal” channel while he is in the room because of the commercials… not even DH’s baseball or hockey games! (Although he doesn’t always turn them off…) The only channel I will put it on during the day is the Weather Network. He does watch TV on a special channel for pre-schoolers that has ONLY pre-school programming and NO commericals. They just have very short ads saying things like “This portion of Treehouse is brought to you by Huggies.” All the ads are baby and child products.

DH and I do watch TV in the evenings after the boys are in bed or while they are having their bath. We watch too much TV, if you ask me. And I let DS1 watch too much TV. Lately it has been my catch-all with how tired I have been. He’s out there watching TV right now, actually…
