AP:

A Saudi prince believed to be the wealthiest businessman in the Muslim world has donated $40 million for Harvard and Georgetown to expand their Islamic studies programs, the schools announced Monday. Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Alsaud, who gave $20 million to each university, is a nephew of the late King Fahd and worth upward of $20 billion, according to Forbes magazine, which ranked him fifth on its 2005 list of the world’s billionaires.

From the Boston Globe: After the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, in which 15 of the 19 attackers were Saudis, Alwaleed tried to donate $10 million to the Twin Towers Fund for victims. Former New York City mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani rejected the gift because of an accompanying press release in which Alwaleed urged the United States to reexamine its Middle East policies ''and adopt a more balanced stance toward the Palestinian cause." corner.nationalreview.com/05_12_11_corner-archive.asp#084517

He would be donating this to promote Wahabi Islam. Wahabi Islam is a fundamentalist Islam that promotes Islamic law as the only law for a State and promotes Jihad. It is the same type of Islam that the Islamisists believe in. Not all Wahabis are Islamisists but just about all Islamisists are Wahabi.

Or, he could be donating it because of shame about the apparent involvement of his countrymen and to contribute towards reperation for the victims, AS IS MUSLIM CUSTOM!!

This sort of assumption sums up all that is wrong with western thinking.

I’m sure that’s what his intention is. Maybe if he can buy a prestigious university he can straighten things out.

Did the prince say he was ashamed of his countrymen or American foreign policy?

Did his countrymen actually do it, or only apparently do it?

Catholic Universities ought to expand their Christian studies programs, so folks could understand us better.

Why US keeps this awful alliance? Why?
Because, as Churchill said “Jaw, jaw is far better than war, war”

It’s when people stop talking, they start dying. Most of us would prefer to live in a peaceful 21st century, not the murderous 10th century.

"Fight Fiercely, Harvard!" (You’re financed by the Saudis)

I wish Tom Lehrer were around to write new lyrics to his amusing song about our most distinguished university, whose Islamic Studies department is now the recipient of a multimillion dollar donation from Saudi prince Alwaleed bin Talal. This is the supposedly-progressive prince who, you might recall, has also bought heavily into Fox News. Of course the absolute racist nature of his regime (where, among many other Medieval laws and traditions, including institutionalized misogyny, religions other than Islam are banned) is conveniently overlooked by these companies and insitutions. Of course, for Harvard this is particularly… what would Tom Lehrer call it?.. “unseemly”?.. I would call it reactionary.

Actually, the Saudis have a national project to promote Wahabi Islam throughout the world. It is part of their pact with the Wahabi clerics. Also, a number of princes like the idea. For more information read:
Secrets of the Kingdom: The Inside Story of the Secret Saudi-U.S. Connection by Gerald L. Posner

A wonderful peice of literary writing, lets look at the editorial comment from the Washington Post book page:
The dust jacket of Gerald Posner’s Secrets of the Kingdom calls it an “explosive study” of Saudi Arabia. In 14 of its 15 chapters that’s not true, but in chapter 10 it is – literally.
There Posner reports that Saudi Arabia has wired all of its major oil facilities with interlocking Semtex explosive charges that can be detonated from a single control point. Moreover, he says, the Saudis have blended radioactive materials into the Semtex so that detonation would not only destroy the facilities but also contaminate them beyond repair.
Why would the Saudis set off what’s essentially a networked dirty bomb over their oil infrastructure? Because, according to Posner, they want to make certain that nobody could benefit from invading their country or taking down the ruling House of Saud. If the al Saud family goes, Posner writes, the world’s petroleum-based economy goes with it. Posner, the muckraking author of nine previous books, acknowledges that he cannot be sure this story is true. And indeed a Saudi official has questioned the credibility of the allegations. Posner attributes the story to conversations among Saudi officials intercepted by the National Security Agency and Israeli intelligence and compiled by the NSA into a file called “Petro SE” – for “Petroleum Scorched Earth.” It is possible, he concedes, that the Saudis knew their conversations were being overheard and concocted the doomsday scenario to ensure that the United States would come to their aid in a crisis. “What better incentive for Western powers, particularly the United States, to come to the aid of the House of Saud if it were under external or internal attack,” Posner writes, “than to think that if it fell, like the shah of Iran did a quarter century ago, they would take the energy infrastructure of Saudi Arabia with them” and cause worldwide chaos?
Wonderful stuff to build a foreign policy on. It seems that making blase statements without adequate facts to back it up is a habit in liturature as well as politics.

How about some creditable links?

Ah, rather than believe some WP critique, you just might want to read the book yourself and come to your own conclusions… 😉
