A Search for National Anthem Consistency

Sports and politics are two separate things and should not be mixed.
Then you should stop singing a national anthem, to a flag, while a military jet flies past. All of those things are inherently political.

It’s interesting from the other side of the pond how much Americans venerate their flag and anthem. The original kneeling protests always seemed polite and respectful to me, its fascinating how different cultures can be.

I also didn’t know the US anthem was about the war of 1812, its unusual to have an anthem about a war you lost (jk).

As for the song, is it really that big a deal? Over here the England cricket team use Jerusalem as its anthem, and Land Of Hope And Glory has been used for England teams in the Commonwealth Games instead of God Save the Queen.

Question to finish, why do you have the anthem before every match? I could understand it if it was a major event like the Superbowl or the World Series finals, but a regular season game just seems odd.

That’s what they want. My family had nothing to do with the practice since we came from France and settled in Quebec sometime in the mid 1600’s. We had big families to do all the work on the farm, not slaves.

But seriously, I never hear anyone make the case that reparations are being paid out as we speak and have been done so since the mid 1960’s. It’s called Welfare, WIC, Section 8 housing and Food Stamps.

The fact it is now being called the “Black National Anthem” is divisive.
That’s a nickname some people use for it, it’s not the name of the song.
What is objectionable about America the Beautiful?
Nothing in particular to me anyways, and that is played plenty, but it’s not the only patriotic song so why would we only play that one?
Oh, it’s just a nickname for the song? What if there was a song with the nickname “the white national anthem”. You wouldn’t find that divisive, I suppose? 🤣

If an anthem is political, it is no longer a national anthem but a political anthem.

If your family was in America and was not subjected to racial discrimination, then it benefited from racial discrimination against other Americans. Never forget that. Or as some say as to minority persecution “Je me souviens”.

Reparations to whom for what? I think you should consider that there are more whites than minorities receiving benefits under those programs.

Research what is called the “Cajun notional anthem”. No one calls it divisive.

Well, you know how much tension there is between the Cajuns and the non-cajuns…
And how the Cajun national anthem is played before NFL games…

The French-Canadian was terribly discriminated against in his own home of Quebec by the English once the French were defeated at the battle of Quebec City. From that time forward they were treated as second class citizens, with the French language and their religion suppressed. The political power of the province resided with the English way up into the 1960’s. My parents only moved to the United States in 1950, so my ancestors had nothing to do with and did not benefit from slavery here in the United States.

All I am saying is that I see the government payouts to black people as reparations. If you do not agree that’s fine, but that is my opinion. The fact that white people get the same type of payments is irrelevant - both are getting something for nothing.

So the NFL has declared that on the first week of games, it will play a “Black national anthem”.

Being that those who kneel for the American national anthem are largely praised by the media as brave, virtuous, and demonstrating their right to protest… what if people decided to kneel for the “Black national anthem”?

Would that be also brave, virtuous, and a healthy demonstration of protest?

If not… why?? What would have changed besides simply whether you agree with the protest or not?
Well, as it’s just been the national anthem since 1931, it’s certainly not a part of the foundational history of the country.

I’m a fan of changing it to the shorter version of “This Land is Your Land” by Woody Guthrie.

Kneeling during this would strike me personally as a little tone deaf.
I don’t think if you kneeled during it that you should be kicked out of the game or anything but if someone walked up to me and told me that they kneeled during the anthem I’m not sure I’d hold them in a very high degree of respect.

Government benefits are not payments predicated on past ills. In a few instances the government has paid reparations, like to the US citizens of Japanese ancestry after WWII.

The question was benefiting from racial discrimination in the US, not slavery.

Maybe if the NFL had 70% Cajun athletes the song would be played? Like the bagpipes played at police funerals, huh?
Are the bagpipes optional? If someone doesn’t want them, must they have them?

Do the police act like the bagpipes are some kind of official national symbol?

No. Pretty much standard at police and fire memorials. Not funerals.
Do the police act like the bagpipes are some kind of official national symbol?
Yes, as a matter of fact. Not a peep of protest is heard, either.

Correct. To those who were actually harmed, not descendants ten times removed who were not slaves some 150 years down the line. But hey, I’ll play along. If anyone is to pay reparations then it should be the Democrat Party. It was their members who were the ones who continued on with slavery long after the North had abandoned the practice and they even fought a war to keep it no less! Then after the war, they instituted special poll taxes and other impediments to keep southern blacks from voting, plus they also imposed segregation and Jim Crow laws throughout the region - all of it done under the imprimatur of the Democrat Party. They owe the money, not anyone else.
The question was benefiting from racial discrimination in the US, not slavery.
Once again it was the South who benefitted most from slavery, not the nation at large. As I said earlier, the Northern states largely abandoned the practice. Vermont was the first state to do so in 1777 with the United States Congress banning the slave trade in 1807, the Southern states however soldiered on with the practice.

How “overlooked” black history is??? There’s an entire month dedicated to it, and you’re forced to acknowledge it in school by order of state education.

I’m fine with history, but there’s no “white history month”, or “latino history month”, etc. that are enforced by the state that you MUST learn or suffer the consequences.

We overcompensate and exaggerate being black in our society IMO. If you walked into our country cold… you’d never know blacks only make up 13% of the population… based on media coverage, exposure, etc. You’d probably guess 40-50%. We also give scholarships, jobs, etc. to people simply because of black skin color to fill out quotas. There’s no whites only policies.

I say treat everyone equally, and those who earn and achieve should be recognized no matter what their skin color is. Again, this comes down to whether you believe in individualism or this new leftist race-first ideology, which has a lot in common with segregation in the Democrat Jim Crow era.

That’s because people don’t use it as a tool to point the finger at America as “racist” and promoting “white supremacy”…

The BLM and this anthem is doing just that. The entire movement is constantly a negative critique on America, offending millions of people. If offending people is evil, the standard has to be upheld both ways. That’s why the standard of something being wrong because it offends is dumb in the first place. However, while the left cries of evil simply because someone says something that offends them, they unapologetically and knowingly offend millions, and pat themselves on the back for it.

Hypocrites. The word is overused, but the truest definition I’ve heard is “X is wrong, but it’s okay when I do it”. That’s what the BLM and leftists are doing here. It’s a dog and pony show, meant to rally a voting base and advance a political agenda… nothing more.

all of it done under the imprimatur of the Democrat Party.
Actually wrong. Are you going to seek Whig reparations next? This whole ‘Democratic party fostered racism and slavery’ is inaccurate. Deal with racial discrimination and its results. Leave off the snappy, inaccurate comebacks, too.
Once again it was the South who benefitted most from slavery, not the nation at large.
Get off slavery and focus on discrimination against minorities. Then we can have meaningful dialogue.
