A slight glimmer of hope for people wanting Orthodox-Catholic reunification

Pope Benedict XVI invites Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople to the meeting of the Synod of Bishops in October. Source
 
I wouldn’t be so quick. Many Orthodox view Patriarch Bartholomew as oversteping his bounds. I think there are other Patriarchs who are more telling on how the relationship is. Look at Patriarch Alexi or the other Russian bishops and the Serbian bishops. They aren’t quite as enthusiastic about these talks between Rome and the EO. Patriarch Bartholomew is only one bishop in the EO church.
 
The Ecumenical Patriarch may be “overstepping his bounds” in the view of his contemporaries, but I will continue to pray for the end of this thousand year old Schism, “that they [we] may be one, even as you [The Father] and I [The Son] are one.”

His Holiness Benedict XVI has made it clear that this is an issue of grave concern to him and wishes to make every effort to heal this terrible rift and I will support him with my prayers and where possible, my words and actions.

I agree. I think that is what we should do.

Yes, but as a Patriarch, how is he overstepping his bounds exactly? He can speak for his own patriarchate, can’t he? Or does he have to check in with higher authority in the EO church? (Trick question, no? 😉 )

He can do as he wishes as a bishop and patriarch of the EO church but the thing is that many of the other EO bishops, even within his patriarchate(all bishops have equal authority in the EO church) view him as a radical Rome lover who does not represent them.
 
Regardless, this is a step towards reunification. Besides if he decided to join the Catholic Church again, I believe his Patriarch would have to go with him as well. That doesn’t mean the entire Orthodox Church, however that is a large portion of it.

Good, then I consider it a glimmer of hope, as the title says. 👍 I don’t see it as meaning the whole EO will unify with the Catholic Church, though I pray that someday it will. We have to start somewhere…why not with Patriarch Bartholomew? 🤷

I mis understood I believed you were hoping that Patriarch would bring unity, bringing Catolic and Orthodox churches together. Joining Catolic church is not Unity, this is, frank speaking, subservience. This is not meant to be disturbing remark, only that views of Unity are quite different.

So, pride is apparently not a sin in the Orthodox Church? 😉

Note: This is just meant as lighthearted teasing. I don’t know what our final unity will look like…I just pray it happens.

It doesn’t matter how that unification comes, my point was that unification would be a good thing. I understand that the Orthodox Church is in unity as well, my point was that the Catholic and Orthodox Churches should seek unity.

No one knows what it will look like, however, it would be a great thing. It would also be a big sign for Protestants, that things are not right in their churches.
