I feel blessed to live in Cullman. Alabama may be part of the Baptist Bible Belt, but Cullman is the Catholic buckle on that belt. The county has three monasteries, two of which are major tourist attractions, and a thriving parish church. I was Baptist when I came here, but I’ve been Catholic for 6 years now.
(There is a fourth monastery, but it’s not in communion with Rome, and we won’t talk about it here )
I am pleased to report that the fourth monastery, Christ the King Abbey in Simcoe, has been reconciled with the Catholic. There was an article about the reconciliation in this week’s diocesan newspaper. A related story can be found here:

That means that now in Cullman County there are four Catholic monasteries, an amazing number for a rural county in the state of Alabama. Cullman County is truly the Catholic buckle on the Baptist Bible Belt 😃
