I really had backed out of this thread because I don’t really care what people believe about AA or alcoholism. I answered the OP’s question and I was moving on.

But I found this statement so incredibly funny, I had to comment.

What you should have really said was: whose word I am going to take some guy claiming to be sober for 28 years because of AA or some other guy claiming to be a doctor? You don’t know either of these people. Both could be lying, or both could be telling the truth.

I guess you just feel the need to believe the one that reinforces your beliefs.
Now you presume that I don’t actually know estesbob…

We AA’s stick together 😉

Or at the very least, living isolated as a dry drunk, stigmatized by judgmental attitudes for past behavior, and not addressing the issues that drove one to abuse alcohol in the first place, versus living a normal life as a non-drinker.
This was a good post.

I really don’t have a problem with Alcoholics Anonymous. I believe that one of my family members who used to be an alcoholic got help through them. Their theological beliefs seem to be consistent or compatible with Catholicism.
Holly,

Then you would agree that Protestant thought has lots in common with Catholicism since it sprang from Catholicism. AA/12 step religion sprang from Protestant thought and you should see commonality.

Mgray,

Soliditary in the face of adversity to reality. You are a testament to the distorted thinking that those that may think of going to AA should examine.

It makes me happy when I hear the good news that the program of AA has to offer and a testimony of when it works!

God bless you and your family member 🙂

Mgray,

AA/12 step religion has a success rate of 37/48, less than a 5% success rate or no better than spontaneous resolution or essentially no better than doing nothing. This is reality. You should feel good and happy when you hear it works via testimony, it aids you in ignoring reality.

God bless you as well.

And trust in God! As I said many pages ago it is useless to argue with people who are not in AA and/or not an alcoholic. For them its a philosophical debate-for us its a matter of life and death.
Matthew 6:34 speaks to me in reference to “one day at a time”;

34 “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will [a]care for itself. **Each day has enough trouble of its own.

You’re right estes- trust God, clean house, help others!**

Mgray,

This is a perfect attitude…and when you continue to examine Methodism you are performing the work of John Wesley.,…
  1. Continuous Diaries
The significance of this “Method of Holiness” is that the diary served as a tool for self examination, and included blessings, sins

Mray,

I am delighted you read the Bible, as you know, we are not Bible Christians and there is a deposit of Faith in the Catechism.

I asked you and Andrew to discuss for me the relationship of the Theologic Virtues, human virtues and gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit, also found in the Bible…however you don’t have to try to figure out what the Bible teaches as it is taught…

just a simple understanding of what you see so lurkers can see that, as you say, you were Protestant, had Charity and help them understand what this virtue and gifts do in the light of sin as it relates to drinking or other habits and vices.

Since when have Catholics ever believed that John Wesley’s work was all wrong simply because he was a Protestant? If he were all wrong, there would be no Methodists today.

Jerusha, are you aware that you are not a bible Christian? Lol (see Coptic’s previous post)

…pretty sure I heard three readings from the bible at Mass last Sunday…

Jerusha,

Where do you find any evidence posted that Wesley is wrong…The Vatican has praised Wesley.

Mgray,

You like anything that supports what you think and believe. I don’t care if Billy Graham, Fr. Martin, or anyone else delivers the message…the message is

AA has religous/religion involved to correct sin/character defects and ranks 37/48 when considered and compared with other methods that work and has a success rate of no better than 5% and if you go you will believe with recalcitrance that you are diseased in spite of reality…

You don’t like the message of reality.

Please don’t waste my personal time with private messages to links to dictionaries…

It was a link for “lastworditis” geez…

Great videos Mray82, I find the 12 steps go right on the line of Catholic teaching, thier just worded differntly because of the fear some people have on organized religion.

Peace be on you

jesus g
Thank you. I love Fr. Martin…he was another ray of light pointing to Catholicism (along with all the Catholics I met in AA, including a priest).

God bless you as well.

Your criticism of AA implies criticism of Wesley’s denomination, simply because it is Protestant. So what if AA is partially rooted in Wesley’s method? I thank the Mormon cultural influence for helping me stop drinking as early as I did.

Sheesh!! you are as stubborn as Tom Nosser.

J,

You wrongly believe that exposition is criticism. My concern is those 95% that AA does not work for and those that lose their faith in AA. Do you care about them?
