[QUOTEthe debate at the core of the Christian faith.
]

What debate? The Christian faith is built on the Resurrection = if you believe in the Resurrection you are a Christian. If you don’t, you aren’t.

I’ve never heard of anyone calling themselves a Christian who does not believe that Jesus rose from the dead.
Who comes up with this stuff?

Hello All,

With Fr. McBrien and Bishop Spong on the list, I have a pretty good idea where this special might lead. There was a special w/ Peter Jennings about Jesus sometime ago. It was pretty dry and “scholarly”. The UFO special was far more interested and, amazingly, balanced. They had guests that solidly challenged the skeptics. It appears Lee Strobel is the best chance for a “balanced” special. We should all write to ABC and ask that they have Dr. Scott Hahn, Fr. Mitch Pacwa, Jimmy Akin, and/or Karl Keating on the show! 🤓

ABC is anathema in my home. When Christians turn it off maybe they’ll turn their attention to other matters.

How about Archbishop Pell or Fr Neuhaus? I agree with your list as well. It’s like they stacked the decks to get the kind of panel that would support their skepticism and secularism

I can spot at least one dissenter in the bunch. Can you guess?

Somebody already expressed positive views of Lee Stroebel. That is reassuring.

I do not know enough about the other eleven. But I am sure some of you do. Let’s hear it!
Would it be this fellow?

Now THAT is a quote for all time!! Good one, Space! 👍

Why can’t ABC get someone who is in communion with the teaching of the Holy See like Jimmy Akin, Father Corapi, or Karl Keating. If we are going to be “damned” by those suckered in by ABC, I would rather it be for what we really believe.
Do you think any of those would have responded to ABC’s request?
Somehow I think they get the ones who agree to be on such a show, and people like Keating or Corapi would not want to lend credence to mainstream media’s attempts to present the faith, knowing they’d have to trust in the editing process. I could be wrong…it just seems the real defenders choose other avenues to defend the faith.

I agree with you in principal, with the exception, for that which was stated in my original post:

Should ABC do such sacrilege to Muslims, Hindi, or Buddhists, there would be such an outcry that the entire world would take notice.
First of all you’re predicting the outcome of a show you haven’t seen yet. You are presuming it will be sacrilege. You don’t know that - yet.

I remember watching PBSs documentary on Mohammad and I found it rather interesting - boring in some areas - but overall it led me to a better awareness of Islam. However, I have no idea how accurate it was.

I’ve watched some shows on Judaism as well. Again, I don’t know enough about the religion to know whether or not what was presented was accurate.

I certainly don’t recall a major uprising by Muslims or Jews after those shows aired. I think, overall, they either don’t watch them, or they appreciate the attempt at secular media to present their position and overlook any slight misrepresentations, writing them off based on misinformation or lack of faith.

There are some concepts those without faith just cannot comprehend, and if they can’t comprehend it they can’t be expected to explain it, but the attempt to try - if done with sincerity - should not prompt protest.

Just my opinion.

I believe you are correct, but I think the debate on this point is what is meant by “resurrection” or “rose from the dead.” Does it mean a reconstituted dead corpse or does it mean a spiritual resurrection. Crossan, for example, as I understand him, thinks that Jesus was resurrected in the spiritual body of Christian believers and is still alive there. Other writers believe that Jesus’ body was revivified and made whole, at least in part, and he was bodily taken to heaven after his post-crucifixion appearances.

Bishop Spong is a NUT. He is a hateful, vitriolic hatemonger. I cannot FATHOM why anyone listens to him anymore. I was “stuck” reading a couple of his books for a book group. This man needs a Valium.

I have read two books by Bishop Spong and I haven’t found any expressions of hate in either of them. In fact, his books seem to me to be rather elementary presentations of some of the issues ordinary people like me will meet when attempting to read scripture.

Can you show me where he has expressed hatred for anyone?

This Friday, May 20th, 2005, The ABC News program 20/20 will air a segment named “Resurrection”. The segment is being advertised:

"The Resurrection of Jesus Christ: Searching for Answers. Elizabeth Vargas travels to the Holy Land and talks to scholars, writers and theologians about the debate at the core of the Christian faith.

I am concerned that ABC will place a weak Christian theologian to speak for Christianity and then position scientific possibilities as overwhelming fact. From what I have been able to discern from the advertisements, the tact that ABC is taking is that Jesus never really died on the cross but only wounded, and thus, there never really was a resurrection.

I am amazed that all of Christianity will likely take this lying down. Should ABC do such sacrilege to Muslims, Hindi, or Buddhists, there would be such an outcry that the entire world would take notice.

I know we are to “turn the other cheek”, but are we not also to defend the faith?
No one here really expects orthodox Catholic instruction from ABC, right? At least Elizabeth Vargas is a babe.

I saw most of the show and Fr. Murphy-O’Connor seemed entirely orthodox.

I saw the program, it was’nt as negative as I had expected, however the media will never end anything w/ a positive note.

it seems they rely on the last comments to stick w/ you the most

I was amazed.

I was fully expecting to be fuming the rest of the evening. It turn out to be reasonable even if it was very simplistic and general. An hour is not a lot of time to talk about the “Resurrection”.

Much ado about nothing on my part I’m afraid.

(Did you see the ads about the report they are going to do about the DaVinci Code?..stop it Jay…Your stirring the pot again… http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon7.gif)

I watched it…

Actually I was pleasantly surprised…not as bad as I thought it would be, considering Fr. McBrien was one of their experts…
I thought thatFr. O’Connor did a good job and the author of the book A Case For Jesus…Strobal I think??? was not bad…
Strong…I think that’s his name …left me rather cold…
All in all…not great…but not bad…IMO…🙂
