Cardinal Seán seems to think the status quo is not good enough and was calling for a change - a conversion. That is the message I got. I heard him say we need to be more like pro-choice advocates and “learn to focus more on the woman in crisis”. I don’t know why everyone thinks that is so controversial.
I think Planned Parenthood*** takes advantag***e of women in crisis and gives them false solutions to their problems. So yes, in that sense, they are focussing on the women in crisis, just like a molester might focus on a child to gain their trust. Or like a terrorist recruiter might “focus” on a youth to make them a suicide bomber. etc. etc. I hardly see that as a kind of positive “focussing”. I hope you see the disctinction. The pro-life movement, on the other hand, tries to help the women in crisis by giving them solutions - adoption, e.g that don’t involve killing the baby.
The numbers speak for themselves. Either other options are not “clearly” available or are not regarded as very good. Adoption is the example he used. We all think its a wonderful idea, but most women who face a crisis pregnancy think its a worse option than abortion. The women who went to Gosnell’s clinic are the perfect example of this - they were seeking late term abortions rather than waiting just a little while longer and giving the baby up for adoption. That’s mind-boggling to me.
As I mentioned earlier, the abortion lobby skillfully propogandizes to convince people that having a baby is much worse than killing it. Remember our own president Obama who said he didn’t want his children “punished with a baby”. Maybe that’s why young women think a baby from a crisis pregnancy is worse than abortion, ya think? Of course, don’t forget the trash that is fed into young minds everywhere courtesy of the mainstream media, movies, pop culture, and public education.
However, I’m willing to admit that NARAL’s real incentive is to protect the abortion industry, but only if you are willing to admit that the NRA’s real incentive is to protect the gun manufacturers. Follow the money… Can you admit the two groups are exactly the same? If the answer is “yes” then all is well. If it is “no” then we have a problem.

(continued on next post)
Well, thanks for your willingness to admit the truth about NARAL. But so what? Even if I grant what you’re saying is true for the sake of argument, consider the result of NARAL’s efforts: millions of unborn killed and doctors like Gosnell. The result of NRA? Millions of owners of guns. The two groups are NOT “exactly the same”. One is evil, the other is a lobbying group on the side of gun owners/manufactures. Do you think that having a gun is evil like having an abortion? Bellasbane, reading this thread something occurred to me and I hope you take it to heart: perhaps there would be more interest and consideration for pro-life strategies if they were expressed by someone who doesn’t support the party which is joined at the hip with the same group of people (NARAL, etc. ) which made possible this monster, Dr. Gosnell. I know that I have a hard time taking advice on effective pro-life strategies from anyone who would defend Democrats regularly. Its about credibility.

Ishii thank you! Perfectly said and on point (unlike the NRA reference which is totally irrelevant as well as off topic.

In response to bellasbane, the only thing I might add is that it is NOT the pro-life folks who need a ‘conversion.’ There are thousands of pro life volunteers at crisis pregnancy clinics, at shelters for women and children, at food pantries and clothing banks, counselling outside of abortuaries and letting women know about these options. The claim that all pro life people want to do is force women to bear unwanted children after which they are abandoned is specious.

I grant that you are right, somehow women have been led to believe that a pregnancy and delivering a baby is somehow worse than an abortion (although having read testimony of what Gosnell’s patients went through I have to wonder!). But whose fault is that…the pro life volunteers? I don’t think so! Between our government, notably POTUS who characterizes a baby as “punishment” and the Leftist Feminist oriented media, we are taught from a very young age that pregnancy will ruin your life and your plans, that contraception and abortion are a right and that there is no coummensurate responsibility. Planned Parenthood goes into schools with an agenda to sexualize teens (don’t believe me look at their website!) than reap the benefits of selling contraception and abortion. Planned Parenthood gets HALF A BILLION DOLLARS of yours and my tax money. Oh they claim that it doesn’t pay for abortions but I’m a CPA and I know how easy it is to have fun with numbers. Proof of this is that when Planned Parenthood is challenged to spin off its abortion business from its Title 10 Clinics, it refuses. This evil organization would go broke if not for the blood money of abortion and the funding of the US government.

Now if pro life organizations offering to provide women’s healthcare received half a billion dollars, they could provide far more services as well as education couldn’t they? Even in spite of this handicap, the pro life movement is growing and it’s the young people who are leading the charge. They know that there are millions of their dead brothers and sisters in heaven cheering them on!

I am surprised to hear that from a fellow Catholic. What do you think Jesus meant by “love your enemies”? Its easy to love those who agree with everything you believe. The challenge is to love people who disagree with you enough to at the very least understand where they are coming from. Understanding isn’t the same as agreeing with them and sometimes it allows you an “in” where you can get to them and show them a different way of thinking about things. I think that is what Jesus wants me to do.
Uh huh…that’s what Jesus wants you to do…AS YOU CONTINUE TO VOTE FOR AND SUPPORT PRO-ABORTION POLITICIANS AND THE PARTY OF DEATH. Personally, I don’t think that is what Jesus would do. You should ask Cardinal O’Malley how he feels about it. I believe the term he used in the quote I provided earlier was “scandalous.”

Loving your enemy isn’t the same as supporting your enemy and turning a blind eye.

I wrote it wrong. It should have been TRAP - meaning Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers. Laws that ignore equivalent types of medical clinics while imposing heavy regulations on abortion providers for the purpose of shutting them down. These types of laws have been introduced in Alabama, Indiana, North Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Mississippi, North Carolina and probably more to come.

You don’t need TRAP laws to shut down a clinic like the one Gosnell was running. He operated freely for decades because nobody cared to enforce the laws that were already on the books.

(continued on next post)
Wanted to address this separately as I have never heard of this concept. When I did a search I could not find a single reference to TRAP laws that was not provided by a pro-abortion group. Even Wikipedia had nothing but a definition and a link to a pro abortion group’s site.

I did read several of these sites and found that their descriptions of proposed requirements were incredibly vague and sounded like opinions rather than facts…much use of “this may happen” or “this could happen” or "women might not have access to second trimester abortions if such and such occurs…etc. Again a lot of rather inflammatory speculation rather than specifics.

The few specifics were not something like all abortion clinics must be staffed a certain way or have certain equipment or be within x minutes of a hospital. The few specific provisions were such as a certain width of halls, parking lots as required for other ambulatory surgical facilities. Quite honestly with all of the regulations, it’s not just abortuaries that have to have certain hall width, handicap access, parking spaces. I know when we built our church we had to provide X number of parking spaces and Y number of restrooms and of course handicap access as per all public facilities. I guess they were trying to prevent us from opening! Oh there was one OUTRAGEOUS provision…that abortuaries be subject to unannounced inspections! What are they thinking? After all abortuaries must have sufficient notice to hide any incriminating evidence and destroy incriminating records!

Honestly I would be interested in hearing about this if there is a better source than NARAL or Mother Jones. I couldn’t find one. As Ishii noted, your claims might be have more credibility if you didn’t come off as such an apologist for the abortion industry and the abortion supporting Democrat party. I am proudly pro life and have no problem stating that I see these issues through a pro life lens. You seem to be conflicted and unable to look evil in the face and call it what it is.

Gosnell judge admits mistake: reinstates murder charge for ‘Baby C,’ dismisses another
Judge Jeffrey Minehart has reinstated one murder charge and dismissed another in Kermit Gosnell’s capital murder trial.
Yesterday, he threw out murder charges for “Baby B,” “Baby C,” and “Baby G,” after the defense argued that there was insufficient evidence to prove the babies were born alive.
This morning, the judge reinstated the murder charge of “Baby C,” the newborn that former Gosnell employee Lynda Williams testified that she killed 20 minutes after its birth. It had been placed in a shoebox and shown signs of life the entire time.
The judge said dismissing that charge had been a mistake.
Instead, Judge Minehart said he intended to throw out the charges relating to Baby F, whose only observed movement was a twitching leg.
He did not elaborate beyond the correction.

While it is disappointing that he threw out the Baby B case particularly, I suspect he wanted to limit the charges to those where the child showed distinct evidence of being born alive. Although I bet we all agree that Baby B was born alive and then killed by the scissors snip to his neck, apparently there is no testimony that he moved, breathed or showed other signs of life as did Baby C.

I want to believe that the judge wants the charges to stick and not be easily challenged or reversed on appeal. So while I think Baby B is a shocking example of evil being done, it does not provide strong support for a murder charge which is “beyond a reasonable doubt.” As we’ve seen, sadly, jurors have used this standard to let the guilty walk in other cases. This man must be convicted and pay for his crimes.

Mississippi was the first state to attempt to outlaw abortion using a law that specifically targeted abortion providers:
nytimes.com/2013/04/16/us/ruling-prevents-closing-of-mississippis-only-abortion-clinic.html?_r=0

Lawmakers admit that the intention of the bill was to close the last abortion clinic in the state:
The bill “should effectively close the only abortion clinic in Mississippi,” said Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves in a statement. “This is a strong bill that will effectively end abortion in Mississippi.”
cnn.com/2012/04/04/politics/mississippi-abortion

This is an example of a TRAP law. It specifically targets abortion doctors, while ignoring doctors who do similar types of medical procedures for reasons other than abortions. Until the Supreme Court says otherwise, abortion is still a federally protected right just like religious freedom, gun ownership and voting. Since states are banned from prohibiting abortion, lawmakers who wish to deny women access to abortion in their state create these “Jim Crow” kinds of laws.

I am not ideologically to regulations on stuff like abortions, guns, food & environment. I think they are necessary for the good of society. However, I can’t condone using regulations to outright ban something that is legally protected by the constitution, even if I would personally like to see it banned - like guns & abortion.

Since the Bishop of Jackson has refused to publicly comment on the Mississippi bill, I guess that means we are free to make up our own mind about it.

Thank you for the references as I couldn’t find anything that was even reasonably impartial on my own search. OK I did read the information posted. Coming from a medical practice, I saw the requirments as being related to patient care and this is what was noted in the article:

***The law, passed in the spring of 2012, requires doctors at abortion clinics to have admitting privileges at local hospitals. Lawmakers said at the time that the requirement was intended to protect the health of women, though the governor and several legislators did not disguise their hopes that it would lead to the closing of the state’s lone clinic, the Jackson Women’s Health Organization. ***

So the effect would be to require the clinic to comply or close even if that were not the original intent. So I understand the objection by the clinic owner who has a financial stake. But given the Gosnell trial and recent closures and restrictions of other abortion clinics, the concern for patient health is well founded. I know that hair dressers and nail salons are subject to standards such as licensing, equipment, cleanliness and disposal of chemical or biological products. I don’t see that it’s so onerous that those providing gyn services should be qualified. If not board certified, how is a patient to know if the doctor is compent? Gosnell was not an Ob/Gyn and his patients suffered (along with the babies!) due to this lack of training.

On another note, what providers do “similar procedures” and are held to a lesser standard? What is “similar” to an abortion? Can women get abortions elsewhere? If there was only one clinic in the entire state, does this mean that the major issue is that one clinic owner will suffer financial reversals and does this really mean women will leave the state for abortions? Isn’t there a Planned Parenthood or hospital to provide the services?

I think the objection by Planned Parenthood is that abortion providers know their industry is becoming seen more as ants at a picnic than a valued service. Like porn shops and massage parlors, local people are deciding what they want in their community. If the people of Mississippi don’t want abortion clinics in their state, so be it. That’s the beauty of having statewide solutions…one can move or drive across state lines.

Oh and one point, just because one has a “right” to obtain a service or buy a product, does not mean that a state or city or private organization must provide easy access to the service or product. To pull in your NRA analogy, since I have a right to bear arms does that mean there must be a gun shop within driving distance of my home?

At any rate I appreciate your information although I don’t particularly care if abortion becomes more and more restricted through such laws. We know a baby is going to die but with high standards and regular inspections, at least fewer women will be injured or killed in the process.

Lisa

The same thing goes for free speech.

I remember there was a public outcry in my grandmothers rural town because someone wanted to open a strip club. You hear similar things when someone wants to open an adult bookstore in a neighborhood.

However, I can’t condone using regulations to outright ban something that is legally protected by the constitution, even if I would personally like to see it banned - like guns & abortion.
Even the Supreme Court has not ruled that abortion is a right protected by the Constitution. They’ve ruled it legal due to an assumed “right of privacy.” Many legal experts, including Justice Ginsburg have considered Roe v Wade to be an overreach of the courts.

I think Planned Parenthood*** takes advantag***e of women in crisis and gives them false solutions to their problems. So yes, in that sense, they are focussing on the women in crisis, just like a molester might focus on a child to gain their trust. The people who work in pregnancy crisis centers are not the problem - they are part of the solution. Raising awareness about what they do is a key strategy in learning to focus more on the women.

The problem is the impression many women have that the pro-life movement is “judgmental and uncaring” and that’s due to many reasons. Some of it is due to the laws that target women seeking abortions and some of it is due to the rhetoric of pro-life activists who openly or subtly express contempt towards women who experience crisis pregnancies or have abortions. People pick up on that sort of stuff.

For example, when I brought up transvaginal ultrasounds, the response I got on this forum was that the very idea that a sexually active women could be humiliated by the procedure was bogus. Mockery and ridicule was what I got. I don’t know what those folks hoped to accomplish, but they certainly reinforced the narrative that pro-life people are “judgmental and uncaring”.
As I mentioned earlier, the abortion lobby skillfully propogandizes to convince people that having a baby is much worse than killing it. I think they are good at convincing people because they truly believe it themselves. They want immediate solutions to a problem that requires a complete overhaul of the culture in order to fix. The solution for the pro-life side is to present a compelling alternative to their vision of the future. A Culture of Life is a compelling alternative.

Changing the common wisdom on adoption seems very doable to me. We can start with a major media campaign that promotes adoption as a brave and loving choice. If we can offer practical support to women during their pregnancy so that it doesn’t derail their lives, then that is even better. If we can give them some feedback on how their child is doing - maybe by promoting more open adoptions. That would be great too. This is something we can do right now and could make a big difference.

Too bad you had to add that last dig. It really saddens me that you always have to bring it back to politics. It makes we wonder what your true agenda might be.

NARAL and the NRA are like two peas in a pod. Even if they are evil by lesser degrees, they are still both evil. The NRA is more insidious then you think and its presence in society inhibits our development towards a Culture of Life. It really too bad more people don’t see the parallel, but at least the Bishops do.

Late term abortions are illegal in Pennsylvania - NARAL didn’t win that one. In fact, they seem to be trying to use this case as an opportunity to change the laws and make them legal so they can be “properly regulated”.

Gosnell was allowed to operate because nobody bothered to enforce the law, even though several complaints were issued against him. The failure was one of enforcement not lack of regulations. It demonstrates how little people care about the what goes on in the inner-city.

The people who work in pregnancy crisis centers are not the problem - they are part of the solution. Raising awareness about what they do is a key strategy in learning to focus more on the women.
.
Agree.
People pick up on that sort of stuff. .
Well, my experience with the pro-life movement is that it is sympathetic to women who have in fact had abortions - emphasizing God’s mercy, etc - project Rachel, e.g. We need to be merciful toward women who have had abortions, just like we should show mercy to any sinner, of course. I hear a lot of contempt toward Planned Parenthood and pro-abortion rights politicians, but I don’t know about contempt towards the women in crisis pregnancies themselves.
For example, when I brought up transvaginal ultrasounds, the response I got on this forum was that the very idea that a sexually active women could be humiliated by the procedure was bogus. Mockery and ridicule was what I got. I don’t know what those folks hoped to accomplish, but they certainly reinforced the narrative that pro-life people are “judgmental and uncaring”…
I know. I read all the posts. I am sorry that you felt mocked and ridiculed. Perhaps the posters meant to contrast the transvaginal ultrasounds with the procedure of abortion which would seem to be much, much more humiliating and invasive. You have to understand that after 40 years of Roe V Wade and millions upon millions of abortions of babies, sometimes we pro-life folks get frustrated and forget that we need to be constructive in our arguments even when we are frustrated and feel that our arguments are a no brainer for any Catholic.
I think they are good at convincing people because they truly believe it themselves. They want immediate solutions to a problem that requires a complete overhaul of the culture in order to fix. I think that is a very positive and life-affirming idea, Bellasbane. Abortion should be better promoted as an alternative to abortion. Agreed.
Too bad you had to add that last dig. It really saddens me that you always have to bring it back to politics. It makes we wonder what your true agenda might be.

NARAL and the NRA are like two peas in a pod. Even if they are evil by lesser degrees, they are still both evil. Well, sorry if I offended you. We have a duty as citizens living in a country that has elections than have implications on whether our laws will protect the unborn or not. In other words, don’t forget the political side - we need to work toward laws that respect life. And no, the NRA pales in comparison to NARAL which seeks to continue the legal slaughter of the unborn. The NRA merely seeks to protect the interests of legal gun owners and gun manufacturers. Even if you are making good points elsewhere, you are off base in lumping the NRA and NARAL.

Overall, I think I can agree on much of what you post here, Bellasbane. However, I think that anyone pro-life needs to take the next logical step and start really criticizing the pro-abortion rights folks who are part of the problem. I mean the Pelosi’s, Obama’s, Biden’s of our country. It will be difficult to change our laws to protect the unborn if they and the rest of the abortion lobby are allowed to continue to shape our laws.

Ishii

Bolding mine.

Can’t condone it eh? You might want to rethink that along with your vote for Pres. Obama.

Just because something is legal,it doesn’t make it moral.Abortion is immoral, period. That this"right" has evolved into the killing of fully formed babies, who moments later,if born, would be considered worthy of life is very disturbing.😦
