I am posting this on this forum rather than the media because of its content. It is a review by Manohla Dargis in the New York Times October 3, 2007, page B1, of a film Lake of Fire. The headline is “Abortion as a Front Line in the Culture Wars: Graphic and Unnerving on Both Sides.” I have not seen the film (and am unlikely to since I doubt it will be shown in the provinces). One line from the review: “…you should know about this fascinating, discomforting, at times unpleasant, confused and confusing film is that it sets off extremely graphic images of actual abortions against a notorious photograph of a woman who died after an illegal motel room abortion, visuals that are inflammatory if, for the most part, also germaine.” The extreme images include a doctor picking through a tray of the remains of a second trimester abortion among others. Quite frankly, I am unsure what to make of the review except that it is as close to a pro-life position anyone will ever see in the Times (Still, not yet close enought). The reviewer writes “If nothing else, the first abortion in the film, reinforces what an abstraction the term “pro choice” really is.” I would appreciate your comments on the review and your comments on the film if you have seen it. If this belongs in the Media forum, I trust it will be moved.
