I’m curious, what illnesses do you think I have?
sociopathic, homicidal or you crave attention to the point of having (making up) offensive opinions which would classify you as a pathological liar. Another senario would be you have an antisocial personality disorder and is a psychopath. All of which are mental issues.

Killing a minor is a capital offense because it is a vulnerable person, much like the murder of the elderly or disabled…on the other end of the spectrum, are people with alzheimers people and worth a murder charge for killing them? Or a mentally retarded person? Or someone in a coma? Or simply the very old or senile? They have as much brain function as a newborn.

I guess a lot of people are sociopaths then, since it’s not an uncommon view to identify personhood with consciousness.

This is why over half of Americans supposed Terry Shiavo’s husband’s decision to stop life support, why most people support abortion in at least some cases (even if they are only health and rape/incest).

For that matter, it even used to be a Catholic view that ensoulment happened when the fetus first moved.

🤷

The most weird thing to me in all this thread, is the objection to IVF because fertilized eggs are persons. Really? A single cell without a mind is a person?

Not the same as murdering a fully conscious baby. Not the same at all.

A baby will SCREAM if you try to harm them.

That’s different.

If you try to kill a cow or any other animal it will try to fight you off and survive. Do you eat meat? Why do you think killing animals to eat them is ok?

Flyingfish, a baby’s a human. End of story.

You seem like a reasonably intelligent adult. Where the HELL did you get the idea that killing a newborn isn’t murder?

A baby is a fully conscious human being.

And if people are eating babies, there’s something wrong with them.

For the record, I don’t eat meat. So that’s not even relevant.

PS before anyone jumps on me and calls me murderer and other such negative names, I’m trying to explain as unbias as possible.
We realize that believers and non-believers do not hold the same views.

Thank you for your explanation.

I think killing conscious beings (human or not) is murder. If a baby is conscious, then I think killing it is murder. The reason I said what I did, is that from what I read newborns aren’t conscious (they don’t even recognize themselves in mirrors as far as I know).

The reason I brought animals into it is for consistency, I don’t think I can justify distinguishing between human and non human life. It’s an arbitrary distinction to me. If an animal has a mind, it’s a person. If we happen to invent artificial intelligence, it also would be a person.

One…we have laws on how food production can kill animals that we eat. we are also talking about two vastly different things. We kill animals to eat them, to get the nuroushment that our bodies need as omnivores. Some people choose not to eat animals and must take vitamines and other amino acids to replace when that meat provides. We do not participate in cannibolism therefor the death of any living human being is illegal unless done for valid justified reasons. For that matter cannibolism because of necessity is not illegal, seeing as I am a byproduct of one such incident, with my greatgrandfather killling his best friend and eating him to survive. (Long story but that was the giest) And you are maligning the prochoice argument and that is brain FUNCTION not conscience to the point of a 4 year old (since you don’t think that 2-3 year olds have congnitive abilities nor conscienceness) Brain function begins roughly around 22 weeks at earliest (barring interventions to speed development process) when the cerebral cortex develops the connection is made between the brain and the spinal cord (the part of the body that sends the messages to the rest of the organs). This is why most prochoicers agree that abortions past this point should only be fr serious medical reasons such as life-threatening conditions, that any non-pregnant woman can do against a conscience person that is threatening her life through their actions. They believe that after this point the least amount of force is to be used, which would be induced labor or an early c-section unless those option present a futher risk to her health because of her medical condition. Another reason why later-term abortions are very rare.

Your definition of conscience has no medical basis whatsoever and meets no ones requirements for whether or not someone is a living human being on either side of the argument.

Two wrongs don’t make a right, but three lefts do.

I’m curious about something, and I think (maybe presumptuously) you might have an answer for me.

In some cultures, aborted sheep fetuses are considered a delicacy. Is there anything wrong with aborting or consuming sheep fetuses?

For that matter, it even used to be a Catholic view that ensoulment happened when the fetus first moved.
That was merely opinion, never doctrine or teaching of the Church. The opinion was held because no one then knew anything about the science of pregnancy and the development of the preborn. All they knew is what they felt when the baby began to move -thinking that somehow only then, the baby became alive.
The most weird thing to me in all this thread, is the objection to IVF because fertilized eggs are persons. Really? A single cell without a mind is a person?
With all due respect, flyingfish, when you hold the belief that every time you go to sleep you die, and wake up as a new person, as you seem to think, it’s really no surprise that you can’t really understand all this. I can’t even begin to grasp your thought process, and frankly, I don’t want to.

We realize that believers and non-believers do not hold the same views.

Thank you Mark…I unfortunetly made that remark because you are not the norm that I have come into contact with, and many past responses by others have been in negative light (not on this particular board)

You are talking about something totally different.

It’s a very uncommon view to think killing a 1 year old is not murder. You are talking about something completely different in the above quote.

A sociopath would describe a person who thinks killing a 1 year old is not murder. This had nothing to do with Terry’s case. Terry was in a persistant vegetative state. A 1 year old is not a vegetable.

This has nothing to do with if a person is a person uncouncious or not. It has to do with your thought pattern is that of a person with mental issues. You do not think it is murder to kill a newborn, a 1 year old…ect.

You are talking about comparing apples to oranges. Whether a person unconcious (and it’s really about the person being a vegetable, like in Terry’s case, not just knocked out) or not, is a person or not, is a totally different topic then whether killing a 1 year old is murder.

Anyone who thinks killing a 1 year old is not murder is a sociopath. This has nothing to do with Terry’s case at all.

Quite frankly, either you are a troll out for sh!t and giggles, or you have serious mental health issues. Or both. But, my definitions stand. Sorry, no offense, but it seems no one could get to you more clearly.

You = Not normal

So, to answer your question again about what mental issues do I think you have:

sociopathic, homicidal or you crave attention to the point of having (making up) offensive opinions which would classify you as a pathological liar. Another senario would be you have an antisocial personality disorder and is a psychopath. All of which are mental issues.

Too bad that’s not science.

God doesn’t judge us by our minds, just so you know. Assuming you’re Catholic, that is.

Baby’s a Homo sapien, that means that the baby is human.

Machines aren’t people. Animals aren’t people. It’s not even a matter of consciousness. It’s a matter of species here.

By the way, even if it’s not murder, people who start killing small animals are also the people who end up future serial killers.

Babies are people. Recognized by the law. End of story. Even people who believe what you claim to would wring the necks of anyone who’d even lay a small hand of malice toward a baby.

That’s not even rational. That’s unethical, cold, and sick.

I don’t understand how otherwise brilliant adults don’t even know that baby humans are, in fact, humans…Now I’m questioning our educational system.

Thank you Mark…I unfortunetly made that remark because you are not the norm that I have come into contact with, and many past responses by others have been in negative light (not on this particular board)
I’m normally not the norm. 😃

I save my daggers for anti-Catholic Protestants who think they have wrestled the reins away from the pope.

Well again thank you. Here I have experienced hatred for my religious views (or rather lack of) and also my prochoice views, although I try not to push them onto anyone, When the topic of abortion comes up I try to remain as objective as possible just giving facts and both sides, but oft times that is not welcome.

PS - As for being self aware, I would definitely consider my 10 month old as self aware. He says “Dada” now, gets a “Yay!” and applause from the rest of us, and then he giggles and claps. Then when we all laugh again, he gets embarrassed and hides his face.

You can’t be shy or embarrassed if you don’t even know you exist.

Didn’t Terry smile and react to others? Weren’t some arguing that those were signs of a mind? However people generally thought it was okay to cut life support because they believed the specialists when they said she didn’t have a conscious mind any longer.

As I said, I don’t know when babies become self aware. I haven’t studied this extensively, so I admit I might be wrong. If a 10 month old knows he exists, then he’s a person.

So say if we invented artificial intelligence, and a machine was aware of its existence, had dreams for the future, and a love of life, would you say it wans’t murder to destroy it?
Babies are people. Recognized by the law. End of story. Even people who believe what you claim to would wring the necks of anyone who’d even lay a small hand of malice toward a baby.
I don’t have any malicious feelings toward babies, when I see other people’s babies I smile and wave at them. I think they’re cute.

Contrary to what some people have been saying, I don’t want any babies to die…
