Abortion: If You Could Say Just One Thing

Didn’t work in front of an abortion center, but for a crisis pregnancy center, and here is what I learned. I wrote this after year of working there:

From the trenches of a pro-life ministry……….

Sitting in front of me is a pamphlet on how to minister to a woman considering abortion. One of the sentences that sticks out is the well rehearsed “you can’t just care about the baby, you have to care about the mother, too”. In this is what I think the crux of “pro-life” ministries. Except my perception is NOT “we love the mother, too”, but “we love the mother FIRST”.

Why? Well to start with, in loving the unborn infant, we want what is best for that child. And what is best is not OUR love, or handing out diapers, or baby clothes, or even the fantastic pregnancy, delivery and parenting classes that we offer. No. The MOST important thing that that baby needs, is NOT us, it’s the love of his or her mama. We could not offer any of the things I just listed, and with a mama’s love, the baby would still have a chance for a good life. We could offer all of those things, and all of the support services on the planet, and without his mama’s love, he could literally die, or live a difficult and complicated life. The baby’s first and most important need is the love of his mother, not the love of a pro- life activist. This is our first humility check.
So how do we promote this love? I’ll tell you how we cannot promote it. We cannot shame or judge someone into loving. We cannot nag someone into loving. We cannot promote love by finding the right words to win an abortion argument. Really, we can only love someone into loving. We love the mama, and she turns that love to her child.
Does that mean sometimes we “lose”, lose the fight to promote life? Not really. It means at some point, relinquishing our desire to impose our own will, however noble and “right” our intentions, on another person, and just love……. unconditionally. And that is another humility check. Our love is NOT dependent on whether or not the mama goes through with an abortion we are trying to prevent. We love, and we pray. Sometimes that love is just being, sometimes it is praying, sometimes it is shown in material items (I remember one time my mentor supported a change of heart with a ton of school clothes – this was the love the overwhelmed mama needed to open her heart to another child), sometimes it is helping problems solve, sometimes it is simply being excited about the pregnancy, we never know ahead of time HOW we will be called to love, just that we are…and without a “how to save the baby checklist” in our heads, we make room for the Holy Spirit.

Is abortion destruction of life created by God? Yes, of course it is. But I find it interesting that God has given us a battle to fight, and only one “weapon” in our arsenal is love. All other weapons – anger, indignation, a desire for justice, shame, are ineffective. In giving these up, we actually ourselves come closer to God. We rejoice when love conquers, and grows – in the womb, home and community. We let go of hate, frustration, and anger, and in doing so entrust to God not only the little souls whose lives were not saved, but our own salvation as well.
I guess the essence of a pro-life ministry is love – and humility. We don’t “save” anyone – God saves, hopefully first and foremost us from ourselves. Because with this out of the way, we have room for love.
One of the most compelling stories my mentor ever told me what that of a woman seeking a second trimester abortion. Nothing would sway her. Yet my mentor would not let the two of them part in anger, in judgment. She said to this woman, if you get to the parking lot of the clinic, know I am praying for you, and if you have a change of heart, call me, I will come and get you. If you are in the waiting room, I am praying for you, and if you call, I will come for you. If you get to the point where they have put in the sticks to dilate your cervix, I am still praying for you, and if you call, I will come, and I know a doctor who can remove the sticks. And if you have completed an abortion, and you feel alone, I am still praying for you, and I will still come for you.
As I recall, my mentor did not get a call that day, but later found out the woman did not complete the abortion, and months later, my mentor would herself hold that child in her arms – such is the power of love, such is the power of the Holy Spirit. But for those mamas for whom the darkness is too great to see the light of Christ, there is a greater chance, after witnessing through us the awesome unconditional love of God, they may have eventually find their way back to God, and back to salvation, and one day to being reunited with their children.
Where we cannot prevent abortion, in love let us leave for the wounded a lighted path back to God…………

So, in short, to many times people are looking for “the words” , The most persuasive argument, the most compelling photos. There isn’t a word, a phrase, or chant, etc, there is really only love, humility and prayer.

“what help do you need” “we are here for you” “I am praying for you and your little one”, they cannot just be said, they most be felt. Truthfully, I focus on the woman, and her needs, (which is NEVER a “need” to take the life of her own child") and I humbly entrust the life of her child to God.

The times in my life that I have felt up against a wall, doing things I knew were harmful, acting out of rage, fear or despair, what helped me most was when someone honestly said to me “You don’t have to do this, there is a better way, you are not alone”

@ Gwendolyn…

That is a very profound and seemingly very effective way of responding as far as I can see. Thanks a ton for sharing it! For now, I just stand back and pray, and hope that I pray with love. All your words ring very true.

I think God calls us each and everyone to be supporters of life (and especially) love for the unborn baby and mother, but he never calls us to indifference.

Thanks for sharing that. Maybe the crux is deep down the moms have a seventh sense , a sincerity meter, when they hear words spoken to them. Persons who engage such women in need have to truly be in the right place in their own heart, then even then, it’s still a work of God.

I can understand your Protestant background helping you become Catholic; I’ve witnessed others experience the same and am always impressed with their depth, knowledge, and sincerity. Welcome home.
Yes, actually, becoming Catholic was the next most logical step to take. There was, of course, much more to it than that, but I must same I do feel like I am home… finally.
Thank you

You have said it as well as anyone, in my opinion. It is Love, Prayer, and the Holy Spirit. Thank you so much for taking the time to write about your personal experience working with those seeking abortion. If only there were more with you and your mentors attitude and heart. This is how these babies are and will be saved. THANK YOU

Probably no one on CAF likes that idea but the adoption agencies are making the rules and collecting the fees. There is a cost to the adoption agencies as well so, unless the Catholic church is willing to start their own Office of Adoption and provide these services free to prospective adoptive parents, we have to live by the earthly rules. I believe what’s important is that there are those willing to “offer” up the fees in order to bring a child into their home and raise them in a Christian family as one of their own. That’s truly following Christ because didn’t He “adopt” us all by His Sacrifice on the cross?
I think there should be a limit. Providing medical care for the mother while she is pregnant is one thing. I don’t want to see adoptive families exploited for tens of thousands of dollars and I don’t like putting a price for a baby. I was adopted in the 1950’s and the adoption process has changed drastically since then. I know they do extensive screening on adoptive families now and sometimes mothers can choose the couple she wants the baby to go to and sometimes the mother consents to contact when the child is 18 or she wants pictures of the baby as it grows up. I don’t want to see women getting pregnant to make financial gain.

Thankyou. People say all kinds of “interesting” things as they drive by. One women said, “No uterus, no opinion.” which seems a bit overboard to me. .
As a woman who thinks abortion is wrong, I totally agree with that statement. It is really easy for a man to say a prayer in front of an abortion clinic. And it is just as easy for a man to say a prayer in front of a strip club, yet I never see them do it. When is the last time men have an organized a day of prayer to end pornography?

Women often think abortion is the only choice because sadly, society has given them that impression. If we want women to KNOW there are other options, we have to show them there really are other options BEFORE they even become pregnant. Learning CPR, is done in a casual environment. We don’t wait for someone to have a heart attack and use that as the opportunity to learn.

Organize a fight to stop degrading women. Create a club and have brochures. Then when you see a woman going into an abortion clinic, give her a pamphlet and say ‘I would appreciate if you gave this to the father of your child. We would love to help him learn to respect you. Or, if you feel like meeting some nice guys, we are holding a social next week’.

Stop praying for an end to abortion and start praying for an end to pregnancy outside of marriage

ohhhhhh Good point!!!👍

That is a very very good point…

For the people who have a ministry of some sort in front of Planned Parenthood on abortion days, what do you think would be the most powerful or persuasive thing to say to the woman going in for the abortion if you had just 20 words or less? (30 max) I’m a guy, so it seems more apt to ask women what they think could turn the heart and mind of a woman on the verge of walking through that door.

And do you think a woman has more power to sway another woman than a man does in said circumstance?
I think a significant number would stop & pause if anyone said to them “i know people who’ll give you $10,000 for your baby” ie. adoption in 9 months’ time.

That is an interesting idea to explore but 1) Is it true? and 2) would the young women going in believe it?

I think there is a reason, however, that such things are not said as the girls walk into planned parenthood. But at face value, it does not seem so bad. The women just keep walking for the most part when people say, “there are people who want to adopt your baby”.

Yes, yes, yes!

I totally agree with you, Angie. Men have forgotten or shirked their duties in the church and in society. That’s one of the biggest problems in my opinion. When men begin to understand that damage that abdicating their responsibilities has caused to society, they will return to church and begin again doing what the Lord created them to do: protect their families by being holy examples. After being brought to the realization of that concept, I’ve been taking note of the percentage of females and males that come to Mass each Sunday. Significantly more women than men at any given Sunday Mass. Significantly more women volunteer as Lectors and EMHC. The only position I noted there are more males than females is the Usher position. Looking at the age of men who attend Mass, in general, they are those who’ve reached retirement age (maybe 75%) versus those who are middle age and younger. In general, I’ve noticed as many juvenile males are working age males but very few high school and college age males unless they are coming as a family. This bodes disaster for the Church and for society. In my opinion, we can’t wait for the next generation so I’m committed to reaching out and bringing “back” the middle age males then inviting college age males to come to Mass. I believe when there’s a critical mass of this demographics, we’ll tip the scale in the other direction and begin reversing the damage that was done by the “free love” generation.

I would reply privately to the above statements but I’d rather not get off topic in this thread.

I will only say that there is a hierarchy of moral matters. and I would say the murder of the unborn baby in the womb ranks at the top.

If others disagree that is their prerogative, but I’m not going to go into it here.

Yes, please reply to me privately as I am curious as to your thoughts. However, I just want to point out that if there is a hierarchy in moral matters, God chooses the hierarchy, not us

I would say to any woman considering abortion, “You are not alone.” The sense of desperation and isolation is, I imagine, a significant driver of the recourse to abortion.

That is not a loving thing to say. That is treating the woman very poorly. It will drive a further rift, and she will think you are a troll, and not want to speak to you.

There is a feeling among pro-lifers “if only they would consider adoption”. I can tell you, it just doesn’t work that way. Women consider abortion instead of adoption because they don’t believe the baby is a real person yet, and they think that aborting before they attach is easier somehow than bonding with a baby over nine months of pregnancy, giving birth, and handing him over. We have found that the concept of doing so is so upsetting, that pushing adoption in many cases makes abortion more likely.

Only, very, very occasionally, did a mama decide to place her child. Most kept their children. So many times, when we loving supported the women, and helped problem solve the situation, they found a way to parent.

Why else might a woman abort a baby instead of adopting out. Right or wrong, here are some reasons.
  1. abortion is private. An unplanned pregnancy can be kept a secret.
  2. adoption means months of answering painful questions about plans for a baby from friends and family, comments from well meaning strangers. It can be overwhelming. When told she is choosing adoption, even when she believes it best for her child, she feels like she has to defend herself to every family member who, for whatever reason wants her to keep it. Abortion avoids all of this.
  3. If she gives her baby up for adoption, the first person with rights to the child is the father of the child. She may not believe the father of the child to be a suitable parent. The father’s mother sometimes will urge the father not to “give away her grandchild”. If she gives the baby to the father, she may then have to pay child support. She may then have to answer questions for the rest of her life from the child “why didn’t you keep me”. It is much trickier to just not parent in a situation like that.
Even if she wanted to (and assuming that most women would be swayed by this is insulting beyond words) she can’t just give her baby to a high bidder.

Again love these women, with the love of Christ our Lord and Savior. Get to know their struggles. Pray for them. Do not demean them.

I wholeheartedly agree with what you say and I am an adoptive mother of seven special needs children. Several of my children’s birthmothers chose abortion for later births for the same reasons you mention.

Also, it is definitely not a loving thing to say.

Yes, thank you. What we want to convey first to the woman is that we love and care about her and her child. Suggesting that she would sell her child, is neither loving or caring about either of them. I would run for the hills from someone what thought so little of me, and treated me like that. I certainly would not listen to anything s/he had to say, or think that person cared about what happened to my unborn child.

You want the woman NOT to treat her unborn child like an object, something she owns, and can discard, but as a separate person? Then, uh, don’t suggest the child is an object to be bought and sold.

Seven children is a full house, and full heart. bless you.
