This is a serious question to me and I’d like to ask for serious answers based on something from Scripture or the Church theologians, something concrete. I would like to present it as a hypothetical. Let’s say the Pope had a vision, and Mary came to him and showed him some person on earth and said: “That’s the antichrist.” And he believed.

So what would it mean to him? I mean, to the Church, what would it mean if there was a way to know someone who could be identified as the antichrist was here now? I’m not a person who visits a lot of gloom and doom the world is ending sites. I’d really like to hear some knowledgeable discussion because I’m just at a loss.

It is not defined doctrine that the antichrist is an individual. Many (most) theologians believe the antichrist to refer to a widespread heresy.

That’s what I thought, too. So we have no end times ideas from Revelations or anywhere or Tradition about a person who is the antichrist?

One of the best references is 1 John 2:18

"Children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come; therefore we know that it is the last hour. "

there have always been heresies around. So how can this be the anti Christ?

I don’t claim to know much, but I think I once heard Scott Hahn explain that the book of Revelation is the most taken out of context book in the Bible. It’s actually an account of the destruction of the Temple, which explains why John gives no account of that in his Gospel. I think he said the Antichrist was plural, and they were anyone who rejected Christ as the Messiah or who were Anti-Christ.

He explained that the book of Revelation serves today as a reminder that people who reject completely or substantially God’s teaching are doomed; the events could be repeated, but Revelation itself is a completed prophesy. This is at least how I understand it.

Hi Julia,
I have found a good resource on this kind of stuff from San Juan Catholic Seminars and its pretty comprehensive as well as affordable. You’ll notice that CA has it on sale right now as well, so that’s even better. 👍
