I have always known that we Catholics believe in transubstantiation and that during the mass the priest changes (literally) the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ. What I would like to know is are Catholic priest the only person’s that can do this.?What about Protestants when they receive communion in their churches. For those who believe that this is really the true body and blood of Christ, and receive their communion, in other churches ;does God except this? Also, I know that there are seven sacraments in the Catholic Church but I am confused a little. Are sacraments and rites the same thing. Are the seven sacraments the same as the rites. One other thing; how do they change the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ in protestant churches?
Thank you, Brenda

The change of bread and wine to body and blood can only happen by a Catholic priest, in a Catholic mass. Protestants do not have the Eucharist as we know it. They broke the line of Apostolic succession and thus do not have the power handed by Christ to do this. They do not have a valid Eucharist.

Rites are not the same thing as Sacraments. The seven Sacraments are Baptism, Reconciliation, Holy Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Holy Orders, Anointing of the Sick.

Rites can happen for various other occasions, Rite of Election (for those entering the church) etc. Rites may be included in some of the Sacraments, but are not the Sacrament itself.

Only a Catholic Priest can consecrate the bread and wine into the actual body and blood of Christ.

Protestant denominations that celebrate “Communion” usually do it in a symbolic way. If they are told and they believe that their “Eucharist” contains the real presence they are sadly mistaken.

Sacraments are not the same as rites. Rites are ceremonies. Sacraments have their own special ceremonies and they confer special graces on us.

“how do they change the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ in protestant churches?”

They can’t.

I didn’t think they could. Thank you all so much.

Hi,

One correction with the question, the Priest does not change the bread and wine, it is thru the Power of Holy Spirit that the offering becomes the Body and Blood, of Christ.

(Act 3:12 DRB) But Peter seeing, made answer to the people: Ye men of Israel, why wonder you at this? Or why look you upon us,** as if by our strength or power we had made this man to walk?**

Same as when Peter told the cripple to walk, he did not make the man walk.

😉

GregorysArmy:
The change of bread and wine to body and blood can only happen by a Catholic priest, in a Catholic mass.
Just to be a little more precise:

As GregorysArmy mentioned, the issue here is valid ordination and apostolic succession. In other words, only a priest ordained by a bishop through a Church with a valid priesthood can confect the Eucharist. Therefore, only in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches is there a valid Eucharist.

For this same reason, Protestants do not have Churches. They are known to Catholics as ecclesial communities. The only true Churches have all four Marks: One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic. For example, the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Oriental Orthodox, and the Assyrian Church of the East.
