Did anyone watch them last night? If so, what did you think? I only watched them from 8-9 pm plus part of the red carpet I thought the Lincoln-John Wilkes Booth joke was tasteless. I did like Jennifer Lawrence’s dress and am glad she won Best Actress. I wish Lincoln had won Best Picture. I didn’t see it but family members did and they all said it was good. I am glad Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor.

I didn’t watch any of it, mostly don’t care. However I did see the Today show gushing over Michelle Obama on the show. Why do we have to see an Obama every minute of every day? Give me a break already and go away.

I saw bits and pieces, but mostly didn’t care. I haven’t seen most of the movies that were up for awards. I did catch where Mark Wahlberg say he was Catholic when he was presenting an award.

I gave up on the Oscars a long time ago when I realized they primarily promote values against God. Since they are all nominated from past winners, it is a festering pool of people who like the same vices. It’s been quite ugly for too long.

I saw a little of the beginning and mainly the end when the awards for Best Actor, Actress, Director, and Picture were presented. I thought there were several tasteless jokes, and I don’t regard myself as a prude. What was the bit about Jews in Hollywood and making fun of the Christian Right? The host was rather boring: I preferred it when Billy Crystal was in charge and, way back, in the years when Bob Hope was master of ceremonies. I must admit I didn’t see any of the films but find it interesting that there are nine nominees today, as if there are so many great films that deserve to be nominated, compared to those of the past. I doubt it. The In Memoriam part was nice, with Barbra Streisand’s appearance and singing. All the nominated songs sounded horrible to me.

Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress. I was glad about that. You’ll remember she played the leading role of Katniss in The Hunger Games, the movie that had no Oscar nominations despite record box office receipts.

Poor Jennifer was wearing that grossly impractical Scarlett O’Hara dress and she fell flat on her face while trying to climb the stairs to accept her award.

They gave brief glimpses of all five best actress nominees’s performances, and from what I could see the other four were terrible. No wonder Jennifer won.

I saw no point of putting Michele Obama in the program. It was an entertainment show, not politics. She was out of place.
Maybe we can see Michele Obama do the halftime show in the next Superbowl, or President Obama at the Indianapolis 500: “Gentleman, start you electric engines, and thanks for not adding carbon to global warming.” .

I haven’t seen either Argo or Lincoln, but Argo was about the 1979 Iranian situation, I guess. I wonder who will even remember those days fifty years from. Lincoln’s years will never be forgotten. I think the Academy blew it.

When huge amounts of campaign money comes from Hollywood, guess she was just “giving back”. Can you image Laura Bush doing that? Better yet, can you image Laura Bush being asked to do that? IMO, it cheapens the presidency.

I didn’t watch the Academy Awards, since I had to work late, but I’m really glad that Argo won best picture. The language in the film was pretty bad, but otherwise it’s really excellent. It puts down Hollywood in a big way, though; mostly through humor (Alan Arkin and John Goodman were outstanding, really), and maybe that’s why some folks in Hollywood weren’t too thrilled with the film.

There were also a few Catholic moments; the main one being where the main character (Ben Affleck) had an Infant Child of Prague prayer card. I really liked that. It was also fun to see the 1970’s clothing and hairstyles. The film is a great mix of humor and drama, and Affleck was able to expertly weave together two different areas of where the story took place (the Middle East and the U.S.) Really excellent direction and editing. Also, my son works for Warner Bros., and he loved the film, too.

Yes, we watched the Oscars and it was as bad as I thought it was going to be with Seth Macfarlane as the host. His jokes were offensive, but that’s what I expected.

Glad to see Daniel Day Lewis win though, he’s one of my all time favorite actors.

OH, and yes Mark Walhberg said he was Catholic but then proceeded to be involved in a joke about orgies. I don’t get him at all.

Host - awful
Best Picture - Argo was excellent!
Best Supporting Actress- Anne Hathaway for Les Mis, great choice
Sitting at home making fun of dresses on the red carpet - priceless

I wonder why Ben Affleck didn’t win for Best Director. Only four times in Oscar history was the Best Picture winner not accompanied by Best Director. Then again, the whole affair is so political it is no wonder Michelle Obama appeared to announce the Best Picture.

I’m surprised at you, mary. Do you honestly think the Office of the Presidency can be cheapened any more than it already has been in the past 50 years? Besides, I CAN imagine Laura Bush being asked to do the same and consenting to do so. She strikes me as a wild woman beneath the reserved librarian facade!

Highlights:

Seth McFarlane - Pretty sharp, though some jokes were quite cringe worthy (Eg the one about George Clooney and Quevenzhane Wallis… Was glad they didn’t show Clooney’s reaction…Was so embarrassed for him!)

Charlize Theron - best dressed, very elegant; also loved Halle B’s, Sally Field’s

Glad Argo won

Loved Dame Shirley Bassey

Loved the Von Trapp Family skit

Loved Tarantino’s speech

I think the Academy got the voting correct; at least this year, most of the general public actually saw the movies.

Overall grade - B+

Affleck wasn’t even nominated for Best Director.

It is odd that Ben Affleck didn’t win (and wasn’t even nominated for) Best Director. I agree that it does seem political that Michelle Obama announced the Best Picture winner. But then, Hollywood does seem to be about being ‘politically correct,’ with so many of the films they make.’ Oh well. 😃 I still like a few of them.

I think Seth McFarlane is a very bright and talented man; too bad he is so crude and tasteless. (I was astonished to discover that he was a Grammy nominee for “Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album” and is an accomplished singer!!!)

I also enjoyed Argo tremendously, and am pleased - though rather surprised - that it beat out Spielberg and “Lincoln”. Though I love everything “Les Mis”, I knew it wouldn’t win. The big musical number the cast did gave me chills, as usual.

Charlize Theron is stunning and I loved the dance with Channing Tatum. (I understand she has a mouth like a sailor, sadly…)

I was very surprised that Emmanuelle Riva did not win Best Actress (as was, I think, Jennifer Lawrence.)

I had the distinct feeling that the Von Trapp Family bit (which I loved) went over the heads of most in the audience there; then again, they don’t really seem like a “Sound of Music” kind of crowd.

Unsurprised by the Michelle Obama schtick, though it didn’t really bother me; to be expected.

Wow!

I didn’t actually watch the Oscars… but I was horrified to think Argo won best picture!

Other than John Goodman and Alan Arkin I thought the acting was mediocre and it was so obvious which parts of the plot were changed to make them more interesting. (Like the final escape scene. Totally made up. I looked it up later because I figured there was no way that’s how it happened.)

It was OK entertainment-wise. I’m glad I saw it. But it really wasn’t all that impressive a film!

The people who did the sound mixing for Adele’s performance of “Skyfall” messed up big time. Glad she won the Oscar, though. Can you believe that after 50 years and 23 movies, this was the FIRST James Bond title song to win an Oscar???

The satirical publication Onion is drawing criticism (deserved, in my opinion) for calling the 9-year-old girl who was up for Best Actress a profanity. (Sorrry, I can’t spell her first name.) I think their language is entirely inappropriate. I find her charming and poised. I read on the Internet that she is going to be the next Annie.

Do you mean to say the title song of “Goldfinger” didn’t win?
