I agree with a lot you say here. There are actually a couple of issues involved in this question. One is how does God save us and the other is how do we experience it. I think its possible for a person to be saved and not know it and for person who thinks they are saved but are really not. Both involve some kind of self delusion.

Do you think Christ intended His followers to have confidence in Him for salvation and to be at peace about it?
Absolutely. And most Catholics enjoy that confidence and walk their salvation road in joy and trust. There is a straw-man view out there among SOME promoters of the “perfect assurance” game that anything short of total, absolute, perfect personal assurance of our salvation means that we walk around in a dither, fretting about whether our good works are good enough and whether the hand of justice is going to smite us in the end and send us to hell despite our love and our best intentions.

Of course, this is absurd. Doubtless, there ARE people who feel like that (Luther was one of them, I believe) – but as you point out: they are deluded and lacking in the trust of faith.

I think a lot of the controversies between Catholics and Protestants – at least on the street level – arise from the personal neuroses of those engaging in the discussions.

I suspect we depend on 2 different rocks…
If you do, it is because you fail to understand that Jesus grafted Peter into Himself. Jesus also grafted the foundation stones of His church, all the Apostles and Prophets. He does not become less of a Rock because he builds others into His Rockness.

Likewise, He does not diminish in glory because He allows His glory to shine through others.

It makes me wonder about these things. I suspect that many people do not nourish their faith and eventually lose it or it becomes diminished so far as to look like an unbeliever.
It is very Catholic of you to say that! 👍

I think that YOU call them “Prostestant” (That is what your Religion on your profile is listed as: prostestant). Is it a new denomination? How old is it ~ two weeks?😃
Yes both do involve some kind of “self delusion”. Unlike RCCs who are actually saved and know they are saved! 👍

I can’t think of any teaching in the Scriptures where this is said. 🤷 Do you have a reference? Who did this apply to? How are we as individuals to apply this to ourselves? Should we? Where does it say that in scripture? So would this be an example of Tradition in “action”? Can you clarify? **

I believe all the brethren above me, and I also believe that accepting Jesus as Savior entails being ever loyal to Him. When we accept Jesus as Savior, he saves us at the moment of our acceptance. What if we sin again? Is he able to save us? I think yes, if you re-accept him as your Savior again.

It would be sad, wouldn’t it, if we let words and phrases divide us from those who, getting past those words and phrases, believe as we do.

There is at least a little bit of truth nearly everywhere.

Hi Melanie,

Yup! It is sad actually. Jesus made one church, Until 500 years ago there was still unity between Catholic churches because of doctrine. There are now estimated to be 33,000 counterfeit denominations with 28,000 imitation sub denominations with 1,375 doctrines This is actually true. Plus 95% of their practices, traditions, and beliefs are “Catholic”. You said: “There is at least a little bit of truth nearly everywhere”. Now do you understand why? They actually haven’t had enough time to developed their own beliefs, well except Sola Scriptura, and we know how that one is working! They just can’t let go of even a part of the “real” church! I think they might as well start swimming back. Before the water gets …eeerrr…HOT! They don’t realize that even Catholics accept Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior and have for over 2,000 years!

** guan, i am not sure what you are saying. Can you clarify? Do I have a false understanding? The way we could determine if i’ve understood the truth or not is compare it to the Scriptures. If it can be shown i’m teaching something contrary to the Scriptures then i’ve misunderstood something. Who does this apply to? How are we as individuals to apply this lesson to ourselves?

Hey, JA4,
come here for a second, I have something for you:

Hey! That’s not biblical! 😃

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Matt 5:43-48

Here are some verses about our confidence of salvation.

1 John 5:12 He that hath the Son, hath life. He that hath not the Son, hath not life. 13 These things I write to you, that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God.

John 6:39 “This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. 40 “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”

There are a number of “If you…” statements that precede this verse, which are the “these things” St John has written. We can have confidence in our salvation if we are taking up our cross daily and following Christ, doing all that He commands.
Indeed, it is the will of God that all men would be saved. Will all men be saved, or only those who endure to the end?
