Paris, May. 14, 2008 (CWNews.com) - Only one-fourth of the people of France identify themselves as practicing Catholics, and only 7% attend Mass each Sunday, according to the daily La Croix.
The survey shows a steady decline in the number of Catholics in France, which was once an overwhelmingly Catholic country. In a 2003 survey, 62% of the respondents identified themselves as Catholics; in January 2007 that number was 51%.

Wow. This is very sad. Only 7% of Catholics in France attend Mass each Sunday. How very sad. We must pray for them.

I’m actually quite impressed that a quarter of French consider themselves active Catholics.

Well, this is the country that started their alleged “Enlightenment” by guillotining innocent priests and nuns. At least now they only ignore them rather than chop off their heads.

I was surprised by that, too. Even the seven percent figure shocked me, as the popular image of France is one of extreme secularism.

Are we to believe that the number of Catholics in France has dropped from 51% in 2007 to 25% in 2008? This brief article is missing a lot of detail.
51% describe themselves as Catholic

25% as Practicing Catholic.

7% attend Mass weekly.

That makes sense to me.

God Bless

The thing that doesn’t make sense to me is why 25% consider themselves to be practicing Catholics but yet only 7% go to Mass weekly. Wouldn’t a practicing Catholic go to Mass weekly? 🤷

I think we would have to see the exact wording. Maybe the question about weekly attendance eliminated people who occasionally miss mass for one reason or another. For example, did it say “Do you attend mass weekly” or “Do you ALWAYS go to mass EVERY Sunday”. Lots of people probably go most of the time but miss once in a while.

Or “did you go to Mass this past Sunday?” The answer might be “no, this past Sunday I was sick” so you get counted out.

Napoleon threatened to destroy the Catholic church…A priest said to him , if we haven’t been able to do that ourselves, how do you intend to do it?

The church is still there ,and some of the people that have dropped away, will again return…History is filled with times when the pendulum has swung both ways…Remember the Cure of Ars?

I agree. What difference should it make to us what percentages of the population do or don’t do? Answer: None.

I disagree. If the number of active Catholics falls below a certain level the life of the Catholic community will die. Where do new priests come from except from the community of active Catholics? What opportunities to people have to come together for worship, devotion, education, or any other purpose if the Catholics are spread too thin? If you are one of a handful of Catholics in an area, it becomes much harder to practice your faith.

This means if true there are mors Muslims in the mosque on friday that Chrtiians in church on Sunday.

Just like England. More Muslims in the mosques on Friday than Anglicans in the churches on Sunday.

Scandanadia is quickly heading this way too.

Defacto - practicing/active. As in Christians who really believe and act on it - are being superceded by Muslims who believe and act on it in country after country in Europe.

Hmmm, that is true. I never really thought of it like that. Thanks! 👍
