Actor aims to clarify tainted image of priesthood in play about St. John Vianney

Hello everyone-

There in an article about a one-man performance about the life of St. John Vianney in my Diocese. The article is very neutral, but the first comment takes a total cheap shot on priests. There is only one other comment defending the priesthood for the article.

If you could please take the time to read the article (the production is very exciting!) and then make a comment, I would be grateful. Thanks!

The comment is the typically ugly, ignorant remark you see when there’s any kind of article about the Church, the priesthood, Catholicism in general. Your best option in this case it so ignore the comments.

I saw Leonardo perform this a few weeks ago. On a stage in the front our local Catholic parish’s school cafeteria. About 10 rows of people covered the entire ground of the cafeteria.

He did, as usual, a superlative job!!

I’ve also personally been in the audience when he performed St. Augustine, St. Francis of Assisi, and St. John of the Cross. I’ve also eaten dinner with him, speaking with him as we sat next to each other during a meal that there were 5 people at each of the tables when the local Catholic radio station was having a speaker after dinner. He’s very knowledgeable. Incredibly talented. And very, VERY humble.

What Leonardo said is exactly true.

I say that because there’s been nasty comments about Leonardo’s presennting his live performance of St. John Vianney just goes to prove something we already knew… that the enemy is sneaky… and a Liar. THE Liar.
 
I’m confused – the point of the play is “to clarify the tainted image of the priesthood” – why is that a cheap shot? The priesthood has in fact been tainted by revelations of abuse and administrative mishandling of those cases, not to mention the billion dollar payouts for victims and lawyers.

Of course we know that the percentage of abuser priests is very small and the media coverage has been extremely vocal and biased – but surely you can’t pretend that public perception of the priesthood is as positive as it was before all this came to light?

If the point of the play is to correct and restore an image that has been tarnished, what is your objection to the lead sentence of the article?
