While I would love to take the credit, somehow I doubt Hollywood takes many cues from the Catholic Church. Hollywood’s only god is the almighty dollar. Either way, a win is a win.

So what? The Sam Elliott has not point. If the Church disapproves of an athiests’ show that lambasts the Catholic Church, that is to be expected. That is why it is advantageous to have a broad appeal if one wants better ratings and not make a movie obnoxious to the largest religious demographic. You can’t have it both ways.

What was in the golden compass that was against the Catholic Church? (I’ve seen it before but to be honest, it didnt leave much of an impression. It was pretty boring and while I’m curious to know what was bad about it…I’m not curious enough to sit through it again.)

Please; they scrapped the sequels because the first one sucked. The first book was pretty good. They completely ruined it with the movie.

An evil theocracy called the Magisterium? The theme of the story, written by a vocal atheist, is throwing off the oppression of religion.
What amazes me is that New Line was willing to promote this humanistc, atheist tripe to begin with.

Can’t say I’m unhappy that we’re not going to see the next films … but that is because the first one was so bad. I watched it and could not even figure out what was going on. I don’t mind books being made into movies but only if they make sence … I won’t be reading the books either.

Thank goodness the trilogy isn’t progressing any further. I haven’t read the books, but the plot summaries on Wikipedia for the last two books in the triology make The Golden Compass seem mild in regards to it’s anti-religious theme. I also read that New Line toned down the atheist polemics in the film version of the Golden Compass.
I suspect New Line just doesn’t have the stomach to air the truly vile conclusion to this trilogy. Especially in regards to the pre-teen protagonists killing God, embracing original sin, and rejecting “the kingdom of God” for the baffling alternative of “the republic of heaven”. As materialistic as our culture is, I don’t think America is ready for a cinematic manifesto on atheism directed at children. That’s probably why the film was a failure in America but a success in post-Christian Europe.

Let’s make a movie loosely based upon books written by a virulent atheist. Let’s use it to promote atheism as a way to “escape” from religion.
Let’s show it in a country where a vast majority describe themselves as at least somewhat ‘religious’ (regardless of which one)
So. We spend tons of money to make a movie that insults 75-80% of the possible audience and then get angry when it flops.
Then we blame the Catholic Church for there not being a sequel.
Yep, seems fair to me. Also, I think I’ll write the Pope and complain because I dropped a glass the other day and it broke and he hadn’t agree with gravity all would have been okay.
