The first step to untangle science and theology is to accept the Catholic teaching that God as Creator did make an original human person whose single nature is the unique unification of both the science genetic world and the theology rational world. Information source. The dramatic shift from Genesis 1: 25 to Genesis 1: 26-27, which demonstrates the difference between physical material creatures and the nature of the very first two sole real founders of the human species lovingly known as Adam and Eve.
The second step is to understand the difference between science which presents information found in the material world and theology which presents information found in the spiritual world. Strange as it may seem. There can be a scientific interpretation of a theological doctrine.
Back in post 183, I commented that eventually I will address the "scientific interpretation on the theological content of Genesis, chapter 1. "Genesis 1: 1 is a theological doctrine. Its scientific interpretation is the following list of what constitutes the physical/material universe and its living inhabitants. Obviously, this list actually needs the scientific information in order to fully understand what God created.
When we arrive at Genesis 1: 26-27, there appears to be a pause, but it is not a pause in time.
26
l Then God said: Let Us make
* human beings in Our image, after Our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the tame animals, all the wild animals, and all the creatures that crawl on the earth.
27
God created mankind in His image; in the image of God He created them;
male and female
* He created them.

There is a dramatic pause as we examine the shift from Genesis 1: 25 to Genesis 1: 26-27.
CCC paragraph 343
Man is the summit of the Creator’s work, as the inspired account expresses by clearly distinguishing the creation of man from that of the other creatures.
So far, we can find the scientific interpretation that mankind is a physical/material creature with a decomposing anatomy. Yet, along with this, we immediately find the theological interpretation which is that the human person is also a spiritual creature because of his God-created spiritual soul. Because the human person has a single nature, body and soul, there is the reality that both science and theology can address the human person.
Where the “scientific interpretation on the theological content of Genesis, chapter 1” stops is at the beginning of human history–at the very origin of the human species. Divine Revelation continues from Genesis 1: 27 with the information that Adam and Eve have God’s blessing including the necessary nourishment for a material anatomy.
28
God blessed them and God said to them: Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it.
* Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that crawl on the earth.

29
* n God also said: See, I give you every seed-bearing plant on all the earth and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit on it to be your food;
30
and to all the wild animals, all the birds of the air, and all the living creatures that crawl on the earth, I give all the green plants for food. And so it happened.
31
God looked at everything He had made, and found it very good. Evening came, and morning followed—the sixth day.

Contemporary science, in its proper realm of the material, looks at the propagation of species such as bears, birds, and bunnies and determines that they originated in large multiple genetic populations. When we go back to Genesis 1:1-25, there are no specific details about these material creatures beyond the theological fact that God is the Creator. On the other hand, as soon as the first human person appears, there are plenty of details in the first three chapters of Genesis. This alerts the reader that theology is being introduced because God has directly created humankind in His image, that is, humankind has an immortal soul. There is no scientific interpretation simply because science, per definition, is confined to the material/physical world.
Usually, the restrictions of physical science are accepted when it comes to the human person’s, anatomy. What has changed and thus what has to be recognized is that the interpretation of science is that all species originated, over long periods of time, in large indiscriminate breeding populations. Genesis 2: 18 is a strong affirmation that the human species did not begin in the same manner as the buffalo.

The Lord God said: It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suited to him.
