I have a few questions regarding the story of Adam and Eve. For starters, do you view the sin Adam made by partaking of the fobidden fruit a good thing or a bad thing? I’ve been taught in the LDS church that we should thank Adam for what he did because it allowed Adam and Eve to have children and to bring us into the world. Also, do you believe that if Adam had not partaken of the fruit that we would be in paradise right now?
As for “not being able to have children”, if we look at Genesis 1:28, it says: “God blessed them and God said to them: Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it.” God created us as male and female, and then
blessed us. God doesn’t give us a blessing that requires sin to fulfill.
God can and does use sin to His own purpose. We sing the Exultet at Easter, which has this line: “O happy fault,. . . which gained for us so great a Redeemer!’” Which isn’t saying, sin is a good thing that we should thank Adam for, but that by Adam’s sin, we know God’s greater mercy, in Jesus Christ. This is because of God’s mercy, not because of our failure (sin).
next question, Is it a literal story or a symbolic story? I’ve been taught its a literal story, but i would like to hear your thoughts on it.
Truth conveyed via allegory. The message is not about whether two people named Adam and Eve existed, or what year, or for how long. The message is God’s work in creation.
Is Adam the Archangel Michael? Again, this is a common teaching in the LDS faith and would like to get your opinion on it.
Angels and humans are different creatures. Angels don’t become humans, and humans don’t become angels.
And last question, are we held responsible for the sin of Adam? A common teaching in the LDS faith is that we are accountable for our own sins and not for Adam’s transgression.
Original Sin is not a description of something we have, it is a description of something we lack. Adam and Eve lived in the immediate presence of God, which was lost when they sinned. Their children could not inherit what they did not have. Christ has reconciled us.
