Adding more wars

The question is: what practical steps should be taken to avoid such situations?

Surely as a historian, you realize that the ‘domino effect’ was American propaganda. I recall seeing Nixon on television illustrating the domino effect, and many of us bought it. I hold both him and LBJ responsible for ruining thousands of American families by their lies and persistence in continuing the war.

No one does. The military operates, by necessity, in secret. It drives policy. It serves to continue to keep the United States in the position of the most powerful country on earth. Right now, eyes are on China because they have built advanced fighters and because of their space program. A rocket that can launch a large, heavy payload can be easily turned into an ICBM.

We spend more than average on the secondary and primary levels and kids still leave high school semi-literate.
Whoa there. We spend good money, but it is done very unevenly. You know and I know where the good and well funded schools are. You people spend money to live in an area where there are well funded schools. More than that you know the poorly funded schools are in the poor areas. There are also many other factors working against poor kids. They tend to live in more abusive or unstable family conditions. Studies have shown this kind environment tends to make young minds develop in a way that diverts their attention to everything going on around them. This makes it more difficult to divert their attention to learning tasks in front of them.

Our county tends to come out mid to lower on education comparisons between out peer countries. That is because, unlike us, most of their schools are funded more evenly. We have one education system that is world class, my son goes to one of the public schools that is one of them. The other is on par with developing nations and in some cases in essentially a war zone.

To bring this in line with the topic, diverting a portion of military spending would have substantial returns on social spending. If more people have the ability to complete high school, the better their job prospects. This also has a direct effect on family stability and abuse. All of these things and more drag down our Federal and State budgets.

One must ask, who are we expecting to invade us? We have two stable and friendly (one who even shares our language, basic wealth levels, and even culture) countries North and South. East and West we have the largest Oceans. One easy example are air craft carries. There are 15 proper aircraft carries in the world. 11 of those are ours and represent all except one of the nuclear powered ones, France has the other. 2 of those are NATO allies. One (India) we have good relations with and the other is China.

Since the end of World War II, the US military has been on the lookout for what they call “technological surprise.” To quote a past Vice-President: “There are things we know, things we know we don’t know and things we don’t know we don’t know.” China is the current threat.

No one is going to invade us but shows of force are done to keep certain countries from escalating conflicts into local wars, and “to protect our interests,” and that includes oil.

The fact is, the Vietnam vets I knew were willing to serve their country at full risk to themselves. That should be emphasized.
Also, not to nitpick, but a lot of Vietnam troops were conscripts who weren’t exactly chomping at the bit.

What a bunch of malarky.
Social wars rarely, if ever, result in the loss of lives.
All actual military wars result in death and destruction.

There is no even playing field when it comes to spending money on education.
