Just asking… Is it wrong to add song lyrics from lyrics book in the CD album that you buy or from official music portals?

Does the lyrics book include a little © symbol? That means yes, it’s wrong.

I think saying it is wrong to attach lyrics to your mp3 files is stretching the application of copyright laws a little further than necessary. Why would iTunes even make that possible if it was illegal to do so?

I confess that I don’t know how iTunes works, so this may be categorized as Fair Use. When you attach lyrics to a song you own, is it solely for your exclusive use? Is it stored “in the cloud” or shared publicly with others? If not, then I see no problem, since you already bought the license.

It’s just that there are many public lyrics sites on the Internet that operate in a copyright grey-area. They’re not supposed to be hosting copyrighted lyrics, yet many users type in and submit them to be shared to all. That kind of stuff is not legal and probably subject to DMCA takedowns.

No, the information would not be viewable to anyone else besides yourself (unless you share the song with someone else, which would change things of course).

Basically, you can add the lyrics in the same way that you add the song title, artist’s name, album title, album artwork, etc. It’s just text that is attached to the individual mp3 file. Then, if you are listening on your iDevice, you can click over to view the lyrics while you are listening to that song. The lyrics are only as public and “sharable” as the song to which they are attached.

I’ve often wondered about the lyrics sites. On the one hand, they are storing loads of copyrighted song lyrics, which seems questionable. But on the other hand, reading the text of song lyrics is kind of like watching YouTube clips of video games: they’re not much of a replacement for the real thing. I would imagine that’s why I’ve not really heard of musicians or record labels going after the lyrics sites as they have after file sharing sites.

honestly i dont think the copyrights goes as far as that, Yes, the lyrics are copyrighted, to not be used in other songs without the proper legal stuff. but I dont think that adding lyrics to the songs have to do something with breaking the copyright, also i hope so, because when i look for songs on youtube i like the ones that have lyrics on screen, besides looking for the lyrics is a good way to know if the song is morally acceptable before listening to it or buying the album.
