Does anyone else out there ever feel like they are somehow betraying God by liking someone?

I know how ridiculous that must sound to some of you, but I do feel that way at times. If I have a crush on a guy, and think about him (in a pure way of course) the way people do when they like someone, I end up feeling like I’m separating myself from God, like it offends Him. Perhaps it doesn’t, but I don’t know why I feel like that. I used to feel like I never wanted to get married, but I know that I need to be open to the will of God. So why when a guy a comes along that I might be interested in, I feel so bad about it??

Any advice?

It may be a vocation, it may be scrupulosity. You will get good advice here, but I would suggest talking to a priest about it. It’s probably going to be a longer conversation, so stopping him after Mass might not be the best idea. Better make an appointment. This is spiritual guidance you need, more than tips.

Have you ever thought that your openness to the calling of God might mean that your calling is to be a nun?

That was my thought, too. Or are you just the type of person who feels guilty about a lot of things that are nice. I know someone who feels guilty every time she’s having too much fun.

Chrystal, Jesus commands us to love others. You need to ask God’s help with this, as to love God means we must love our fellow humans.

I think here though that you are thinking of the absorbing aspects of attraction here rather than of whether we should love others.
**I hope you will trust God to help you love others without loving Him less, for in loving others, you are loving Him more. Being obsessed by someone can be a problem, though it’s natural to find ourselves thinking of someone a great deal if we’re attracted to them. Maybe you need to find out if the guy is interested in you and if he’s a good man, and if both are true, maybe you could get to know each other, but be loving of God by being faithful to chastity before marriage and by continuing to grow in your Catholic faith, and by sharing in the Sacraments.

Regarding actually loving others…Jesus said: “Anyone who says ‘I love God’, and hates his brother is a liar, since a person who does not love the brother that he can see, cannot love God whom he has never seen.”[1 letter of John 4:20-21]

“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind’ - this is the great and foremost commandment, and there is a second like it, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself’. The whole Law and Prophets hang on these two commands.” (Matthew 22:37-40, and Mark 12:28-34).
“Let us love one another, since love comes from God.” [John 4:7]
“Husbands, love your wives and treat them with gentleness.” [Colossians 3:19] Husbands should love their wives just as Christ loved the Church…each one of you must love his wife as he loves himself; and let every wife respect her husband.” [Ephesians 5: 25, 33]

“Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You; or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and make You welcome; naked and clothe You; sick or in prison and go to see You?” Jesus replies “I tell you solemnly, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me.” “In so far as you neglected to do this to one of the least, you neglected to do it to me.” [Matthew 25:37-40, 45-46]

As one nun said about this passage–If i couldn’t love another person, how could I possibly claim to love God?
