Adoration in a bowl

Hi,

This happened in my parish awhile ago, and I thought I would ask about it here.

On Holy Thursday we repose the blessed sacrament from the Church Proper into the church basement.

In the basement we had an adoration area set up, with a pedestal for the blessed sacrament to be placed on.

The blessed sacrament was in a large glass bowl (many consecrated hosts were here) and put on the pedestal without any kind of cover.

It is my understanding that the Hosts should have been in a tabernacle at this time, as they were “ripe for desecration” in my book.

I don’t believe it was attended the whole time it was out either.

When I mentioned the need for a tabernacle for the hosts my priest sad “oh, that’s too heavy to move”–although I know it is supposed to be, the one we have in our basement is not that heavy, and two of us could have easily carried it to the pedestal fr. had put out. When I mentioned it could be done, he pretty much shrugged me off.

Should I have taken this issue up with my bishop?

“The blessed sacrament was in a large glass bowl”? A glass bowl? Is your priest a believing Catholic? He put God in a bowl on a plinth? Surely this did not happen?!

to me this is a liturgical abuse, i would talk to the bishop about this issue,

i know that my bishop, Archbishop Chaput would not be thrilled about this issue

How can we abuse the Lord…let us count the ways…
  1. Adoration in a BASEMENT
  2. Host not placed in a Monstrance 😦
  3. Host left out so ANTS and SPIDERS…maybe even MICE can be attracted to it! Its a BASEMENT…right?
  4. Consecrated Hosts left in the open…in a BOWL…
Call the Bishop…follow-up with a letter… if possible, get a group together who are outraged by this and confront the “priest”

When the Blessed Sacrament is exposed it should be in a monstrance. It seems that the Glass bowl as become a common “monstrance” as the bowl has become a common ciborium. The problem is that in the Monstrance the Host is at least secured in a lunette and in the cibroium it is covered with a lid. The bowl is neither covered or secure.

I don’t believe it was attended the whole time it was out either.

The Blessed Sacrament must always be attended or must be placed in a secure tabernacle. Tabernacles do usually weigh several hundred pounds.

Should I have taken this issue up with my bishop?

No, it is the pastors responsibility.

In our Church we used a crystal covered container to hold all the reserved Hosts for Holy Thurs Adoration. There was always at least two people in attendance. I too feel that a monstrance would be more appropriate. Out last few priests have said that all the Hosts are Jesus and we should realize this…

Benediction seems weird without a monstrance…

When we do adoration for 4 hours during the week we do use monstrance…go figure

Our Church basement is not a dirty, water puddle type of basement, but what bothered me more than anything was that we had a tabernacle in the basement, a special room, even that we used to use specifically for this… Gets old putting up with it, but I intend to start “shaping up” my priest after this month…that’s when the diocese will have finished it’s priest’s meeting, informing them of how and what to do with RS.

I can hardly wait to make “trouble”

When I entered the seminary in 1989, Adoration was infrequent and NEVER in a traditional monstrance. I don’t remember the Host every being out and uncovered, but I remember lunettes epoxied to everything from driftwood to river rocks, set up on an altar. I understand things have much improved, but some of these Arts & Crafts “monstrances” were truly monstrous (sorry, couldn’t resist the pun!) 😃

  1. Hosts left unattended.
On Holy Thursday, Our Blessed Sacrament is covered with a veil and transported to a tabernacle at a side altar, rather than the central one used all year.
There, in the closed tabernacle, our Prisoner of Love is adored through the night.
As the Blessed Mother did not have the consolation of beholding her Son on that night, neither do we, but we know that He is there.

Pax Christi. <><

In my parish, the monstrace is hardly ever used; instead, the priest just place a ciborium on the altar and that’s it…😦

I wonder if they even know where our monstrance is!

We don’t even have adoration on Holy Thursday. It’s ridiculous.
