im not sure if this is in the right forumm however i have a querie and thought you might be able to help.

i would like to be confirmed however there is only a catacism class for children in our parish (and every neighboring parish i have enquireed at so far) i tried atending these but they assume you already know the basics , when i asked what the fruits of the spirit where the teacher (who was younger than me) just looked at me blankly and said if i didnt know that i shouldnt be coming to conformation!
there are sertain aspects of catholasism that dont get seen outside the catholic church (eg. praying the hours , fasting ((i do actualy know about these)) .) and it is this i need to be taught , not which half of the bible has jesus in it and how to pronounce deutronamy.
i was wondering if you knew of any books that would be of help (sort of a d.i.y. catacism ) untill i can find a parish that has adult classes . i tried asking father taylor but he said he had never taught adult catacism so didnt know where to direct me . (and after a scouge through the presbetary libry it seems the parish has never held A.C. classes!)
any sugestions will be greatfully received.

I highly recommend This is the Faith, by Canon Francis Riply. It is recently out in a new edition that takes account of changes in canon law since the original publication.

It’s very thorough, and also very easy to read. 🙂

PS: Sometimes people in your situation are asked to journey along with the RCIA, and receive their Sacrament of Confirmation along with the RCIA people. Check into this.

thankyou very mutch i shal try to find it .
btw. what is th RCIA i have seen it on a few posts but havent heard of it out side of these forums is it only an amarican or is it woldwide ?

It’s supposed to be world-wide, but if the area you live in doesn’t have a lot of converts (ie: if everyone is already Catholic), it may not be in use where you are.

I might suggest a book called Catholicism for Dummies by Fathers Trigilio and Brighenti. It would probably be available on line from Amazon U.K. for I would guess 10 English Pounds. It contains all you would need to know about the Catholic Faith and than some in order to qualify for Confirmation.

Now how you go about actually getting confirmed as an adult in Derbyshire, I have no idea except maybe contact your diocese.🙂

all parishes should also be offering RCIA–for adults who have never been baptized or who are entering into full communion with the Catholic Church–and Confirmation classes for adult Catholics who need to complete their Christian initiation. Please call your pastor (not a secretary) to inquire, and if he can’t help you, call the Diocesan director of adult sacramental formation, or of the office of catechetics. you might find this on your diocese website.

No catechist should ever make a remark to anyone, child or adult, student or parent, like the one you heard. My apologies for their lack of charity.

Catholic Home Study is a great way to pursue this on your own while you are looking for a good adult class.

I find it disturbing and disappointing, they should be going out of their way to help, especially this Father Taylor.

I took an adult confirmation course in the Spring of 2007. You may want to contact your diocese or archdiocese religious ed center and ask if they can tell you of a parish that is holding adult confirmation classes. We only had 5 students, and most were from other parishes. I personally think you’ll get more out of adult confirmation classes than you would RCIA. I still have my materials, the text we used in addition to the catechism was This is Our Faith by Michael Pennock. If you can only find RCIA though, then go for it!

You may enjoy going thru these lists.🙂

RCIA stands fo Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. So it’s for converts mostly.

It is simply amazing. Forgive me, it is only a rant. When people are describing their horse it is so commonplace for many of them to incorrectly use the word “confirmation”. Now we are seeing the word “conformation” in reference to one of the seven Sacraments. :hypno: :doh2: :ouch: :ehh: :whacky: :banghead:

God bless you for having the faith and courage to seek Confirmation.
:harp:

Not everyone has the opportunity to learn about our Catholic faith because of what has happened in their lives, so I admire you for making the effort to learn more about our Catholic faith!

I will pray for you that things go well for you now.
It is good that you posted your questions here in the forum! 🙂

Warm regards, Trishie

Maybe we should make people pass a spelling and grammar test before they are allowed to open their Internet accounts. 😛

(I am just kidding, of course!)

Ok. There’s an excellent source for you, which is, I believe, written about 100 years ago, but it performs and admirable job of describing everything. It assumes nothing, it is a perfect beginning for you.

amazon.com/Catholic-Faith-LaRavoire-S-T-D-Morrow/dp/0963903268

This book begins at the beginning, and if you read every page, you will be able to impress everyone you talk to because of your knowledge of the Faith. This is NOT a book intended for adults, but it was intended for a catechism for children 100 years ago so you don’t have to worry about being assulted by Bugs Bunny or some other cartoonish characters. Instead, the illustrations in this book help you to understand the Faith better. I heartily recommend this book as a beginning source for you spiritual life.

We offer adult confirmation classes during Lent and Easter Season for Catholics who have just not received this sacrament. It usually runs between 8-10 weeks. Our bishop gives all priests the faculty to confirm Catholic adults on the Solemnity of Pentecost so we confirm them at this time.
