Advice for first EF Mass?

It’s good you still have the missal. You’ll definitely have a chance to use it.

Thanks for the advice. I will bring my missal. I’ll even call the rectory to see where they are in the Latin Rite season. I believe even some of that was changed

They will be going into the season of Advent the same day as in the OF.
 
Hi,

Well I went to my first Latin Rite Mass in over 40 years and I enjoyed it. It was respectful, solemn, and spiritual. I had a little problem keeping up with my missal because the priest spoke so softly. Next time I’ll sit up closer. There were about 50 or so people. It was a lovely old church and not like the big barn like structure I hear mass in, I like it better then the English mass we have today. It is about 45 min from me and I plan to go again. I don’t care for all the noise in the NO. The sometimes clapping the modern songs. Well I guess that is just me. The Latin Rite Mass is just MORE if you know what I mean.

This is my 2 cents for what it is worth.

I heartily agree! We have three parishes here in town are Im lucky enough to have my closest parish be a FSSP parish. So the EF is available multiple times a day all week. I do attend one of the OF parishes on occasionally because I like the music, but you are right its just too noisy. In the FSSP chapel you could hear a pin drop at all hours of the day. Everybody speaks in quiet whispers. The video on page one of the EF in Norway, the priest is talking really loud. Both of our priests say Mass in a barely audible tone. Love it!

You are lucky. I plan on going to the Latin Rite Mass at least once every 6 weeks if not more . I really enjoyed it and the peacefulness of it.

I wish I lived in an area that offered the EF, but I must travel a long distance for it. Where I live, the winter weather cannot be trusted so I will have to hold off traveling for it until spring time, and attend Ordinary Form Masses. I am praying that some day my diocese will offer the EF as none of our diocesan parishes do as 2 local churches do but they are not in communion with the Holy See.

We have two of those in our area as well. One is an SSPX parish and the other is a CMIQ congregation. That’s actually where I bought my rosary. A unique experience to be sure!
 
I went to a EF for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Quite a few people there for a mid week evening Mass even if it was a Holy Day of Obligation.

First one I’ve been to in over 5 years and only my second one ever. I found it to be very conducive to prayer and, surprisingly, I followed along pretty well in the missal and I focused on praying the Mass. It was a wonderful experience. There are a few churches in Louisville that offer weekly EF Masses so hopefully I’ll be able to go more often than once every 5 years.

😃 😮 They have EFs at Immaculate Conception? I knew they have them at St. Martin of Tours and Guardian Angel, and also at one of the hospitals every day, and perhaps some other churches, but I did not know they have them at the cathedral. Well, that is fantastic.

Try St. Martin of Tours. It’s really the most gorgeous church I’ve ever been in, more beautiful than the cathedral. And their masses are absolutely fantastic. And the church is very close to the cathedral, as it’s downtown too. One of the coolest things there is that they have four side altars, and in two of them are full, vested skeletal remains of saints that you can see through windows. That is like the coolest thing I have ever seen in a Catholic church.
 
EF Mass I take it is a latin mass? Tridentine or Norvus Ordo (sp?)?

I have been to one Norvus Ordo mass in Latin…and it was tough for me (no latin background). In our Diocese we have on church that does purely tridentine mass’s (I hear it is one of very few churches in the US that still does only tridentine mass’s only). I know of some families that go and they are very devout…I hope my wife and I can attend it.

As much as how beautiful a tridentine mass is (so I hear), I still have to be greatful for the Norvus Ordo mass, it would have been much harder for me to come into the church if I didnt understand the holy mass at all (due to Latin…although I am willing and wanting to learn).

EF, that is, Extraordinary Form, always refers to the Tridentine mass, yes, which is in Latin anyways. OF, that is, Ordinary Form, always refers to Novus Ordo, which could be in any approved language including Latin, which is still the normative language.

There are churches across the US that offer the EF only. They are usually operated by a group of priests who are solely dedicated to that. Then there are also many more churches across the US that offer the EF alongside the OF, which are usually operated by dioceses.

The Latin texts for mass are similar for both the EF and the OF. In fact, much of it is exactly the same.

I know it’s off topic, but can they even be celebrated any more? I am sure half of the offices required for a Solemn Papal High Mass have been abolished

Are you sure? Besides the Roman Canon they seem quite a bit different.

Yes this particular church consists of 1 priest. Always EF (as you explained).
