So I live in Seattle, and a small group at my parish recently asked our pastor if he would be willing to offer a regular EF Mass. His response was ‘I’m perfectly willing, I just don’t know the rite and I don’t know the Latin.’ Then he went on to say that there is an FSSP priest coming sometime soon(I heard around October) to the Seattle area to set up a parish, and he would try and get him to teach it. Now my question is- what’s the best way to go forward? Does anyone have any experience with getting an EF Mass said at your parish? Should our ‘group’ remind him come October, or should we leave it alone and let it run its course? Should we offer to try and scrounge money to pay for a new altar missal/sacramentary/hand missals for the pews/etc?

Any help would be appreciated, especially from people who’ve worked with their pastor, and gotten a TLM. Thanks in advance = )

You may want to write a friendly letter to your Bishop to let him know of your desire. You could give him a list of the people in your parish who would support it. This is what we did. 🙂

Your pastor promised to start a TLM once the FSSP came in October; its only July. I’d just wait and watch, and if there’s no news regarding a TLM by November I’d start taking further action.

In the mean time, start looking for servers and learning all you can.

In all fairness, if you re-read the OP’s post, all Father promised to do was to ask if the FSSP priest would be willing to teach him the language and the rite.

One of the things you don’t want to do is to demand that Father learn the TLM, as there are probably many things on his plate now and you don’t know what will be expected of him in October. Also, the FSSP priest will be busy setting up the new parish and may not have time to teach Father.

I humbly suggest three things you can do:
  1. Ask Father now, if there are things you can take off his plate to free up his time to learn the rite (i.e. perhaps some extraordinary ministers could supplement Father’s time in taking communion to the homebound).
  2. Ask Father for the name of the incoming FSSP priest and contact him to see if there is any assistance you can offer him to free up some of his time.
  3. Pray for both of these fine men. Both would seem to have interesting months ahead.

What wonderful advice.

If you’d like information concerning the arrival of the new priest, perhaps contacting the FSSP would provide the most accurate and up to date information, saving Father the trouble of checking for you.

Mmmm thank you! That sounds like a wonderful idea. There are two senior altar severs who are learning the TLM for a wedding, and there is a fairly large group that is interested, so we can probably figure out a way to help Father out.

Thanks again =] (to all of you)
