Hi all,

I’m feeling an urge to get more politically active - not to run for office or support a particular candidate yet, but to be involved in general and making myself heard. That said, I wan’t to make sure I don’t do or get involved in anything the Church would frown upon.

I know not to directly support a candidate who supports and intrinsic evil, and to favor candidates who I feel will most reflect Catholic moral teaching and aims. Beyond that, is there anything I need to be careful about? For instance, am I free to work directly for either party, even knowing each party may end up supporting candidates who support intrinisicly evil policies? What are the general guildelines for being involved in political activities? Are there any specific directives I need to be aware of and following? Anyand all advice welcome!

Thanks!

This is very, very good. Thanks; it would have taken me forever to find it myself.

Thanks also diggerdomer, for the USCCB resource. I have referred to it in the past and am reviewing it with greater diligence now.

Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you have no right to let your Catholic beliefs influence your political beliefs/activities. This is usually under the rubric of “separation of church and state,” an overly broad metaphor. Besides, not only is “separation of church and state” not in the Constitution, but the Constitution says, “Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion.” You are not Congress.

LT,
Glad to be of help. I filed it a long time ago for future reference. I guess now is just as good a time to read it again.
