Dude, they weren’t calling the Pope that because he was supposed to be like the Roman emperor, they called him that because he’s the high priest(pontifex maximus) of Christianity on Earth(Christ is the high priest of course). Unrelated. It was simply the vernacular term for what they wanted to say.Some of their successors surely were though - calling the Pope ‘Pontifex Maximus’ like the old head priests of the Pagan Roman State religion?
