The Vatican has no plans to increase security or vigilance amid reports of an alleged terrorist plot against the Holy See, saying the threat dates from 2010 and is of no present concern.

Fr Federico Lombardi, a Vatican spokesman, issued a statement after prosecutors in Sardinia revealed details of the purported al-Qaeda-linked plot today when police issued 20 warrants and made nine arrests in raids across Italy.

*Cagliari Chief Prosecutor Mauro Mura said that as well as planning to launch attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan, suspects may also have been aiming to target the Vatican.

Police in Italy earlier revealed they had executed arrest warrants against 18 people suspected of having links with al-Qaeda…*

Scary stuff. The leader of the group seems to be the Imam of the city of Bergamo.

I think the Italian authorities and the Vatican should be very careful not to underestimate the threat from Islamist terrorists. Both Al Qaeda and ISIS have threatened the life of the Pope on numerous occasions.

I will pray for the safety of our Pope and all those around him.

What did they hope to achieve? Killing the Pope and all the Catholics fall away?

There will always be a Pope!

Our first Pope was crucified upside-down (per his own request), several afterward were also martyred, and the One whom they are all the temporal representatives of was crucified on charges of heresy, blasphemy and political insurrection.

And yet our Church is still going. Hell’s gates cannot prevail over her. They struck our Shepard and He triumphed over Death itself!

Though I do think the Vatican should have a contingency plan for evacuation and relocation of they don’t already.

I agree this is not to be taken lightly. The Vatican needs to be on high alert

Like after the 911 attacks, what terrorist hope to achieve is headlines and notoriety. They hope to achieve people in democracies campaigning against their governments for changes in government policy in regards to Islamic nations. If Islamist terrorists succeed in getting people in democracies to take submissive roles in regards to their policies, and acquiesce in the hopes that the attacks will stop, then they have achieved their goals.

By killing the pope, Islamists will send a clear message to all Muslims that Allah has favored them by allowing them to strike at the head of the Christian infidel. Just as the most common name for boys born into some Islamic countries became Osama for a period after 911, destroying a high profile figure like the pope will gain whoever can pull this off with respect and a high profile in their recruiting efforts. It will sway much of the anti-Catholic sentiment that pre-exists in many Western countries over to their side, by highlighting their particular group as the rising star.

And it will work will persuade Catholics not just on a national scale, but globally, to petition their governments to acquiesce and change their policies toward Islamic countries that would be more favorable to the goals of the Islamists.

I think it would rather persuade Catholics around the world to do quite the opposite.

Maybe.
The train bomb in Spain by El quada turned the people of Spain against their government involvement in Iraq though.
Terrorism does often work on people in democracies. That is what motivates the Islamists to acts of terrorism.

Then again, there have been miscalculations, such as 911. Even if 30 percent of Americans at one time or another figured it to be an inside job, I doubt that the terrorists counted on the other 60 percent raging to the point of destroying two ME countries.

At least for the death of a pope, there is no such thing as a Catholic army capable of doing such damage.
