no they are not set by the diocese. Each parish is free to write their own petitions. there are many sites and books that parishes can use to write the petitions or they can make up their own. They do have to follow a certain pattern howerver…Prayers for the Church, Prayers for Government Leaders, Prayers for the world, prayers for the Community, there should include prayers for the sick and the dead, and for any other specific intentions.I’ve been told by priests that the petitionary prayers are handed down from the diocesean seat. I’d be interested to know if that’s always the case.
I write the petitions for our parish and I look to see what is going on in the community and in the world. I always include our service men and women and usually one for vocations and respect life (although sometimes not every week if I have too many petitions or else I combine petitions)
