I’ve been told by priests that the petitionary prayers are handed down from the diocesean seat. I’d be interested to know if that’s always the case.
no they are not set by the diocese. Each parish is free to write their own petitions. there are many sites and books that parishes can use to write the petitions or they can make up their own. They do have to follow a certain pattern howerver…Prayers for the Church, Prayers for Government Leaders, Prayers for the world, prayers for the Community, there should include prayers for the sick and the dead, and for any other specific intentions.

I write the petitions for our parish and I look to see what is going on in the community and in the world. I always include our service men and women and usually one for vocations and respect life (although sometimes not every week if I have too many petitions or else I combine petitions)

I had no idea that the Gregorian Rite was celebrated in any language other than Latin?

I could not say. How many times?

Regarding the former, he is correct, to an extent. Regarding the latter, perhaps you could ask his opinion of Canon 449? (Not that I am of the opinion that to do so would be the course of wisdom, but there it is)

Being yet unanswered, it seems my question to you still stands: Does a priest have the authority to alter the set text of the Mass?

I never new there was a Gregorian Rite? There is Gregorian Chant and a Gregorian calandar though?

Did you mean Latin Rite?

In the Latin Rite there is the Extra Ordinary Form the Traditional Latin Mass which "pro multis is translated “for many” and the Ordinary Form in which “pro multis” is translated “for all”. Two forms and two different meanings.

On a side note, there are two other passages in Scripture, " 4 Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace to men of good will" Luke 2 :14 Douay Rheims
and " Into whatsoever house you enter, first say: Peace be to this house.
And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon him; but if not, it shall return to you. Luke 10: 5-6 Douay Rheims

Note both of these verses are similar to “for many” meaning only if you are good you will have peace.

But surely you have a thought? Does a priest have the authority to alter the set text of the Mass?

Better yet here is Cardinal Mahoney at Mass. Tell me what do you see wrong? Would you Question him? Click on the link. Now do you see why if the Priest’s, Bishop’s and Cardinal’s can not maintain and uphold Tradition why we must! World you want this to be the norm infecting all the Parishes?

paramedicgoldengirl.blogspot.com/2007/03/closing-massreligious-education.html
Mahoney is notorious for HIS innovations. I have seen a video of one of his other Masses? having life size puppets in the Altar area with him. The “kids” love “him”. Perhaps that is his intent, narcissism? Sad case and even sadder he isn’t kicked out.

I hope this clarifies it for you.
Indeed, my thought processes got tangled.

The point I set out to make was that our obedience is to Jesus Christ and His Church. There have been Cardinals who allied with antipopes. Who then should the parishioners been loyal too?

What should the parishioners done when the first priests in Holland starting distributing Communion to those standing and in hand?

Exactly. So what is the average person supposed to do? Are you disobedient if you report Cardinal Mahoney’s liturgical abuses?

What about when bishops chart their own course in defiance of the Vatican and God’s moral law?

TORONTO, July 25, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In the upcoming edition of Catholic Insight magazine, Canada’s greatest defender of the Pope Paul VI’s encyclical Humanae Vitae - 92-year-old Monsignor Vincent Foy - concludes his lifelong championship of the papal position on birth control. Released today, on the 40th anniversary of the encyclical, Monsignor Foy calls on the Bishops of Canada to revoke their “Winnipeg Statement”, which he says is an unacceptable document of dissent.

Humanae Vitae presents the teaching against contraception as stemming from the law of God, not the Church, and thus as universally applicable not merely to Catholics. However, Msgr. Foy points to a devastating letter sent by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops to politicians which permits even Catholic legislators to support the legalization of contraception.

Msgr. Foy writes: “On Sept. 9, 1966, the CCCB addressed a document To the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health and Welfare: on Change in the Law of Contraception. The bishops said in part: ‘We consider Article 150, which forbids giving information about contraception, as well as the sale or distribution of contraception an inadequate law today…A large number of our fellow citizens believe that this law violates their rights to be informed and helped towards responsible parenthood in accordance with their personal beliefs.’”

As lay people, it is not up to us to enforce discipline in the Church. Apart from bringing it to the attention of the Bishop, and having done that and seen no result, to the Vatican itself, there is nothing for us to do about it. We are at the wrong end of the chain of command for that.

If people want to vote on it every time there is a change in practice, they need to become Presbyterians. 😉

If the liberal element in the Church goes unopposed soon we all will be Presbyterians. Unquestionable loyalty to mortals is how things like Jonestown happen.

If the Mass isn’t to be altered, how did we ever get the Novus Ordo?
The Pope has the authority to alter the text. Not the priest. The priest has to say it as it has been given to him by the Pope. Pope Paul VI is the one who gave us the “Novus Ordo” (Ordinary Form).

But I thought Trent codified the Mass? It had grown organically without any major changes.

It was codified several times before that, too. Each time in different ways, which is why the various Eastern Catholic Churches have different styles of Masses than we do - each of those styles was the universal norm, for a period of time in the Church.

The Aramaic Mass is the one closest to what the Apostles would have known.

I think you should get a copy of the 1962 E.F. Missal and read it for yourself.

The Ordinary Form and the Extra Ordinary Form are the “LATIN RITE” There are many Rites in the Catholic Church and if you attend and are a member of these two you are under the “Latin Rite”

Even if it is a Catholic Priest who made the news Last year Supporting Obama? Would you support and be loyal to him?

I would not support his support of Obama, but if I were a member of his parish and he asked me to read at Mass, I would do so, and I would read what I was given to read. If I found that what I was given to read was contrary to my conscience, I would resign from reading. We are not required to agree with our priests on issues of politics; nor are we asked to be their instructors - rather, we are required to obey their wishes regarding the Liturgy.

Two members of the choir apprached me and questioned me about it. One of them always walks up to the Altar opens the Tabernacle and stands by the Priest during the 'Lamb of God" while everyone else is kneeling.

I mentioned last week Our Priest skipped the Homily on Palm Sunday. They just ignored it. .
  1. It sounds like you are in a wacky parish where anything goes.
  2. It also sounds like you are harboring spiritual pride. That won’t get you anywhere. I just call it as I see it.
  3. Pray for your priest.
  4. Find a different parish. One that can grow you up in the Lord. One where you can learn to be humble and holy.

Any Catholic Priest or Catholic ingerneral who supported Obama during the campaign last year should be denied Holy Comunion and be removed from administering the Sacraments in violation of Cannon 915

Obama’s support for abortion is in direct violation of church’s teachings. All Priest’s, clergy and all Catholics should know this. If they do not. The blame goes back to the clergy and the Bishop for not doing their jobs. This is a little off topic. I just want to state a point.

If you were a member of his Parish you should correct him of his errors. Sitting back and ignoring it your are letting the errors spread and become the truth.
