SuscipeMeDomine:
Perhaps Malkin.'s parish doesn’t have a sound system - I’ve read a few times in a parish without a sound system, and it takes some work to get one’s voice to the back in such a way that everyone understands the lesson…
This sounds reasonable to me unless you overwhelm the sound system so that you cannot be generally understood. Did the choir members say anything like that?
… and, Even with a sound system, many people don’t speak loudly & clearly enough, or distinctly enough to be understood. In fact, at my local Roman Catholic parish, I’d say that 1/3 of the readers have that problem. and that’s a problem, as we’re supposed to listen to the Lector and not read the Reading from the Missalettes.
And, In this case, Malkin made it a point to say that people who had complained that they couldn’t understand most of the Readings were able to understand him when he read the Lessons.
SuscopeMeDomine, the instruction to Reverence the Tabernacle ONLY at the beginning at end of Mass is wrong. I don’t know who told you and the rest of your parish’s Alter Servers and EXTRAORDINARY Ministers of the Holy Eucharist that, but, according to the instructions in the GIRM, it’s simply incorrect…
In my parish ministers have been asked to reverence the altar or tabernacle only at the beginning or end of Mass and otherwise bow their heads when approaching the altar. Is this also the practice in your parish? Is that why the choir members objected?
… Please bear with me for a moment - Who’s present in that Tabernacle? Just a few pieces of unleavened bread? or, The King of Kings and the Lord of Lords? Just a representation of our Lord? or, The Creator of the Universe and the One who redeemed us by His blood? If it’s just a few pieces of unleavened bread and a representation of our Lord, there’s no need to reverence the Tabernacle at all! but, If We’re walking by His seat every time you pass by the Tabernacle, then shouldn’t we kneel in homage at the King of Kings and Lord of Lords who brought us into being and then redeemed us by His blood? When you watch the Masses on EWTN, Do you them bow? or, Do you see them Genuflect before our Lord?
I think you might want to talk to whoever it is that gave you that faulty instruction…
Regarding the Petitions - We aren’t allowed to refer to the Alter as a “Table” or the Holy Eucharist as a “Communion Meal” or “Communal Gathering”. Not only is this dogmatically and theologically incorrect, this is prohibited by the GIRM and other Vatican documents. The Holy Eucharist is the Holy Eucharist, and the Sacrifice of the Mass is the Sacrifice of the Mass is the Sacrifice of the Mass. It’s not a “Communion Meal” or a “Communal Gathering”. I don’t know whose writing the petitions in Malkin’s Parish, but it’s not an accepted source. In those conditions, I’d probably allow him to change the wording…

Wow! In my parish you would change the petitions once and would be corrected by the priest. If you changed them a second time you would cease to be scheduled. However, I would assume the priest knows what the wording was supposed to be but I’d be surprised if the choir members did. How did they even know they should object to this?
… What bothers me is, why is his pastor not taking the responsibility to make sure that the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament is appropriately reverenced (that includes not allowing anyone to access the Tabernacle without first genuflecting) or that changes are not made to the Agnus Dei or other Liturgical Readings (Prohibited under the GIRM)" Why isn’t Malkin’s pastor not making sure that prayers come from accepted sources and that they only use accepted language when referring to the Holy Eucharist or the Sacrifice of the Mass? Why isn’t he making sure that this Mass is done reverently and according to the rules and norms established by the GIRM?

It sounds like perhaps they are picking up more on your attitude than your actual actions. The title you gave this thread is an indication: “being confronted by liberals.” Perhaps you should instead have said something like “being corrected by my brothers and sisters in Christ.” Would that lead you to see things any differently?
SuscipeMeDomine, it’s not our job to judge someone’s intent or whether or not someone is being “prideful”, and it’s not the “Liberals” job not to judge whether their brother in Christ is being “Prideful”. That’s up to Malkin’s Spiritual Director. The two things I see to correct is that Malkin isn’t saying “And Sisters” (That’s in the LITURGICAL TEXT as an introduction to the Epistle and may not be changed, per the GIRM), and that he hasn’t consulted his pastor about the problems I listed with the “Prayers of the People” and instead has acted unilaterally.
I do think Malkin needs to talk to his pastor about his concerns, particularly about the casual manner in which some are treating our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, and before he makes any more changes to the “Prayers of the People”. Right or wrong, the pastor has to have control over his parish as he has responsibility before God for the people of that parish. If he’s wrong, Malkin’s job is to figure out a way to tell him the truth in love and to let him know that he’ll support him in making whatever changes need to be made…
That’s harder than unilaterally changing the “Prayers of the People”.
